From BioMed to Medicine
Hi!!
I was wondering what are the disadvantages and advantages of doing BioMedicine, then starting a Medical degree? In terms of student loan, what funds are there to support the student...How difficult is it to get in to Medical School having a Degree already?
Thanx

This is a rather silly place to post this. People can't respond to a weblog. Not without getting deleted. As I'm about to be.

Hi 123bb
I think funding really is the big issue and where you study. Some traditional med degrees still have the biomed science degree included in the final qualification and if you think you would really enjoy the research side and to have an extended science foundation then perhaps that would be a good way forward for you. Other med programmes offer intercalated degrees. As for biomed, the courses really vary between institutions. Some are very applied and lab based while others are very like premed and have anatomy, pharmacology, pathology and so on.
If you can get into med school now Id say go for it as the competition really hots up when you're a graduate, especially if you are considering the GEM courses. plus you need to consider the extra time you'll require for training for your chosen speciality. I am a biomed grad and I know that my colleagues would all say that its an excellent foundation, that it prepares you for med and assists in understanding treatments and may (arguably) speed up promotion later down the line (apparently) but if you prefer people to cells then i would personally go for med and keep biomed as your insurance option. If, on the other hand, you are not sure about med school, dont let people bully you in to it! As soon as someone shows interest in in medicine then there can be a lot of social pressure from family, friends, peers who are also applying - and also from yourself. I felt it for engineering and biomed I have to say was my (eventual) 'rebellion' -I left Eng at Imperial for sunny old Aberdeen! I think what I am trying to (rather incoherently say - apologies) is that whatever route you choose, be it MBChb or biomed or even Phd, make sure you do it because you really want to as its a lot of hard work and will be a lot harder if you dont enjoy it.... It may sound rather corny but writing out a list of what you enjoy and pros of cons of the courses you are looking at may help. Either way I really hope your decision turns out well for you and I wish you all the best for the future!

if you want to practice medicine apply for medicine, not biomed.
do what you want, lifes short enough.
this is an obvious answer, i'm not sure why anyone would need it but, oi.
and if you dont want to prctice medicine then go out there and find you what you want to do instead of using medicine as a crutch for your own apotheosis."...reminds me of childhood memories,

hey giz i think that last comment was a bit harsh. i know folk in fy2 that can still have doubts about med from time to time! anyways it was me that brought up the comment about actually wanting to studying something for yourself....the original question at the start of the thread was a perfectly reasonable one to ask!
