The Diary of a Graduate Medic

Welcome! I invite you to share with me my first year as a medical student at WMS (if you're that bored you care, that is).

Well, it's the last free Friday morning I'll have for a long time (possibly the last ever based on the horror stories I've heard). I was excited...that is three years ago when I first concocted this plan. Unfortunately for the wider public, and entirely unexpectedly, some crack-pot admitted me onto the course. So here I am, a bona fide doctor in the making. Hmm...yes, well the excitement has soon faded to be replaced with shaking nerves, morbid dread and the heavy weight of financial burden. I'm having so much fun already.

Really though, i shouldn't be so cynical. I haven't even started yet.

Anyway, bye, I'll post something on Monday, if I'm still alive!

Friday 14th (the new Monday 10th)

So my day starts in the land of sleep. I'm driving down a road beside the seaside, it's beautiful sunshine. I get out, have a walk...then I see that guy who always pops up in my dreams and kills me, but I realise it's a dream and wake up before he can shoot me (his preffered method). This happens about 5 or 6 times a year (that I can remember). I look at my alarm clock, it's 08:00. Too early, fall back to - SH1T!!!, IT'S 08:00, it's Friday!

You see as a commuter my day starts early at 07:00, and I leave the house at 7.30 to get to med school in time for my lecture @ 9. It's a 25 mile rural trip and takes some time in traffic. So it's 8.01...SH1T!!!

It's OK, breathe, breathe. After all it's the first time you've overslept. THen again it's only your 5th day at medical school...SH1T!!! I get ready in a record breaking 8 mintutes and I'm out of the house and in my car by 8.10. Good job I don't sweat much! By some miracle (it's called speeding and swirving in and out of traffic) I arrive at the med school at 8.57. Granted I've parked on a yellow no park zone...but hey, what's the worst that could happen.

And so that was my Friday morning commute. End of SH1T moment. Or was it? I enter the lecture theatre, workbook clutched in hand and I get the creepy sense that everybody's weird. Well OK, the lads. Some have pink nail varnish on, others look like they're wearing mascara. I take the only available seat. 'You alright?' I turn with dread to the bloke next to me, but it's OK! He's makeup free. He asks me 'You have a goodnite last nite?' and I'm like 'Where?'. Then it floods back...it was medics cross dressing evening the night before.
The guys (minus me) went as slutty nurses in fishnets and high heels, make-up etc. The girls went as male doctors with moustaches etc...and some went, just as sluts...apparently (I guess the easy girls). Unbelievably the lecture theatre is full...most people didn't get home til 4 in the morning.

Anyway, now that I'd diagnosed the entire cohort as having acute alcohol intoxication and gender identity disorder I attempted to concentrate on the lectures.

Do me a favour, those people that tell you medicine isn't any harder than your degree...just more content...smack them for us, please. Warwick medschool have decided to give us a level grounding in basic science in our induction week...THE HONEYMOON PERIOD IS OVER! What this 'launchpad' as they've billed it, equates to, is a whole degrees worth of knowledge crammed into 3 days...three days! I need sleep now.

Anyway, the moral of the story is don't go to medschool...okay it's not that bad. But you get the picture.

Tune in nxt week for more, if i'm still alive!
