long time no see.......

thought i'd start this blog up again

well i assume you have gathered i'm now at liverpool med school, thoroughly enjoying it. well at the moment i am majorly stressed about a mock osce on monday, but once i've got that out of the way (and failed it - no really, i will fail it) it should be happy days again.

too much has happened over the last term to update so i'm not going to bother, i'll just pick up from now onwards.

so hopefully i'll have a better post for you sometime in the next few days

cuxxx

umm, yeah long few days i know. well we got our formative results back - did very well in the two papers and the comm skills, but failed the osce (along with at least 75% of the year) so i'm pretty happy about them. handed my ssm in today as well, so i get a free wekend till pbl etc start up again on monday (well tuesday actually - i get mondays off this term 8))

really quite proud of my ssm, looks really well presented and i think the comtent is good, but i guess we'll have to wait and see what the markers think.

well, enough from me. have a good one folks...

well the easter break has come and gone, and i did a total of no revision. therefore i am panicking slightly as exams are in about 4 weeks. no, less in fact. ah well.

ssm result - distinction with "excellent" mark for all marking sections. pleased as punch. then brought down to earth buy delightful pbl tutor overhearing us comparing marks before the tutorial and saying "don't want to spoil the mood but you do know no one will give a damn about your ssm grades once you leave med school? just thought you should know..." Gee, thanks mate. at least let us have a little happiness in this period of revision hell :/

bye for now folks

wow, forgotten i had this! just been reading over it - god its a long time since school!

well to update: i'm still at liverpool at the end of year 2 now. exams in 6 days. crapity crap... have enjoyed this year immensly, if not terribly productively (on the work front anyway, my social life's come on a treat!). i've been placed at aintree hospital 2 days a week this year, and its been really great. terrifying at first, but the learning experience has been fantastic - just to feel confident to walk up to a patient and take a history and do a basic examination may not sound much, but its a great feeling to look back over the year and see how much i've improved. just getting used to the hospital environment is a bonus too - it really is a different way of life.

i have also decided to go for the army sponsorship program next year. i'm hopefully down for the aquaint visit in september, and we'll see how it goes from then on. if anyones got any info about the interview etc i would be very grateful to hear it!

anyway, we'll see how long i keep this going again this time - hopefully i'll update at some point in the next week!

Time for an exam update:
The critical skills paper was nice. Very nice in fact. However, we felt suspicious. Why might they have made it that simple? We could think of no catches, no sneaky little questions that plant a little seed of doubt and eat away at you till results day. So we were happy.

Unfortunately, all became clear as we opened the second paper “key clinical knowledge”. Damnit – DVTs? Why not simply a PE? Why vascular dementia rather than alzheimers? In all fairness we had covered all of this, but the conditions they questioned us on seemed to be those which were secondary to the scenarios we were given to learn about. We had a number of cases about heart disease, chest pain etc, and of course this lead us to also learn about DVTs, but after having concentrated on MIs, IHD, etc.

Still, I had a fair crack at it, and hopefully I have passed, albeit not particularly spectacularly.

The real fun started at the third paper. Granted I probably should have actually attempted some anatomy this year, but what can I say –I was having a little “motivational trouble”. So about a third or so of the paper was stats and public health, and the other two third A&P. the stats and public health were nice and easy, but oh lord did I struggle on the A&P.

So all in all I’m reckoning a good pass in paper 1, a pass on the scrapey side in paper 2, and a very possible resit for paper 3. not that it matters, there’s no sun anyway.

And then for the OSCE. I unfortunately was in the morning of the first day, so I was going in totally blind. They say they change the stations each time, but it’s a load of bull. Last year I actually had a plan of all the stations around the ward. So obviously it pays to be towards the end of the week. But despite this setback, I’m actually quite pleased with my performance. Pulled of a near perfect injection I think, and didn’t make any other blinding errors, but my examination for hyperthyroidism was a bit on the sparse side. But I think everyone in my group was, simply because we didn’t know we would be asked to examine for a condition – in the past it has just been “please perform a thyroid examination”. a couple of my histories were a little crap too - blank brain syndrome struck, and also the computer ECG and Family inheretance chart interpretation were a bit on the mean side. I also made a bit of a mess of basic life support as I got flustered, which is an instant fail, but they give you the chance to resit just this station on the last day, which should be fine as I’ve put in a bit of practice. And I got all the basic stuff like washing hands, explaining procedure, gaining consent etc, and these are the bits which really seem to get you're marks up. So here’s hoping for a pass

So that’s that until Thursday when I may be invited back for the BLS resit, and then results next Friday. Can’t hurt to start a little resit work in advance I guess…

good luck for any liverpool peeps who have yet to take their OSCEs. but since you know exactly whats going to come up you should be fine anyway. not that i'm bitter in any way...

woo, go me. dont have to resit BLS. although i'm now a bit of an expert as i've been practicing all day on some strategically placed pillows and a large teddy bear. teddys got a slightly odd shaped chest now, but its all the the name of medicine so i'm sure he'll forgive me.

so i'm a little more hopeful that i've passed the whole OSCE, as if i could pass BLS with that sort of performance, i should have passed the majority of the rest of the stations. or at least thats whats going to keep me from insomnia for the next eight days...

so i intend to eat lots, drink more and enter a pleasant vegetative state for the next week. Oh, apart from Wednesday. they've scheduled a delightfully presumptuous lecture entitled "introduction to year 3". given results are on Friday i think thats just mean, but who am i to complain.
