Basic Biology requirements
Hello
I'm thinking about applying to warwick next year, but i'm a bit worried about their basic biology requirements. My degree is in zoology, and i've really only done minimal amounts of molecular biology, biochemistry and cell biology (and much of that was related to plants!). Plus it was all in the 1st year so my marks are terrible, and my memory of it is hazy. I have 3 modules in genetics, all with good marks.
So really, i'm wondering if there was anyone out there who had got in with this sort of background?
More importantly, how are you finding it keeping up with the hardcore biomedics and biochemists?

Hiya, i think you need to email them to see if your degree makes you eligible to apply. I have a feeling that they may not take zoology (prefer biochem/biological science/medical science). They'll probbaly need to know specific module details to see if you've covered the appropriate material.
Good luck with your future application.

Their website says that they will take people with natural sciences, and they definitely don't specify health science like bristol/liverpool/leicester do.
I'll email them and ask, but i was kicking myself for not applying this year because my msat was above their interview cutoff. Plus it seems like quite a nice place to go
and i can imagine a large intake can be quite nice to work in.

Yeah its ukcat now, msat no longer applies to warwick.
To be honest I wouldnt worry about the bio requirements. You might end up in deep water, but then so would others as warwick are now taking people with economics and anthropology degrees. I went to the open day a few days ago, they said they were planning a 'launchpad' course at the start of first year to ensure everyone was on a level playing field with regards to the biological requirements.Natural Sciences, Cambridge 2007

Oh go on, laugh! You know its the right thing to do.
I too was at the open day and was very very impressed with the university and course. I also emailled them and they said there was no problem with Zoology (that was before they updated their site with a list of acceptable degrees). Hopefully i'll get a good enough UKCAT to apply!

ukcat......cant wait!!!
Yeah thought open day was pretty good. I thought the clinical skills bit was very good, started well, and seemed very relaxed.
The guy (think was a second year) who did student perspective was very enthusiastic which gives good vibes.
Its def on my list and at present is my prefered choice. I also know someone who graduated from there (think from original 2000 entry) and she highly recommended the place!
My only concern is my time away from academic study...I got a first class degree back in 99 and then worked for three 3 years in protein engineering in bacteria. I left for a high paid career to save money for med and went into IT, my partner became pregnant (un-planned) and things obviously changed financially big time. My 2 year turn around plan has now turned into a 5 year plan, hopefully apply next year for 2009!, next year is too tight to make now financially...sob sob!
good luck to you anyway!.....its a long journey ahead and I know it will be worth it!
Jon (mature blokey!)
