Working During Term Time
Does any current students also have a part time job to earn extra money?
How many hours do you do a week?
How feasable is it to work during term time?
Cheers

Hi Graeme,
I'll stick in two-penneth even though i didn't work during term time.
I think it all depends on what sort of person you are, if you are highly motivated and ultra-organised it can be a good thing to earn some money, especially if the job is healthcare-related. However, there is a big BUT, it can get easy to neglect the studies if you get too complacent..especially after the first semester exams...but the second semester is a bugger, the third even worse, as i am soon to find out..
I think the way they examine you all is changing and the course structure is also changing, so might be worth waiting a few weeks into the term to see if you can handle a job too.
sorry for the rambling, hope that helps!

all i know is that the musculoskeletal lectures will now be complimented by dissection in the same semester, rather than the next semester...i think that i s far better for you.
Plus i hear they are doing away with module exams and just having larger IMSAa (integrated medical sciences assessments).... which are clinical scenarios...each question has 10 marks...you need 60% in 70% of questions to pass... i.e. 60% in 5/8 etc.. I think this is quite good too...
Don't know anything else...you could possibly be getting fewer hours in sociology, which would be down to previous years' complaining, especially ours!

This year they are introducing Extended Summative Assessments which is like our IMSA exams (instead of the module ones like Michelle said), although if you fail any component of that you simply get to resit an exam in that area (I think!) but you also have to do an OSCPE at the end of semester 1 as well as 2. You will do musculoskeletal in semester 2 which will make that a very tough sememster as you will also have repro, gastro, cardio, mechanisms of disease, infection and immunity and health psych to do. We only had dissection in semester 2. I'm not sure though if the 3rd years (2004 cohort) had their Musculo the same way as you will. It may therefore be possible to do more work in the first semester but you will definitely have less time in sem 2!

I guess im in a very lucky position that im a Pharmacist and i hope to locum during term time parahps a sartuday or 1-2 evenings a week. I guess i'll have to see how it goes on a week by week basis in terms of my time available.
I guess im not too worried about momney in years 1-2 as savings and summer work should pay for that. How do people find years 3-4? Big work load and short holidays = little time to wok? What funding is available in yers 3-4? Is it the NHS grant (aprox 4k) and nothing elce?
