Status Fee: Brit Citzen in US 9 years, app in Brit, any way of being home student?

    Hi All,

I am a British citizen applied (and accepted!) to UK medical schools who has been in the US for the last 9 years (Moved here when I was 14). I was wondering if any of you had experience in trying to get your school to class you as a home student? Any strategies that have worked in the past? Any that have not? I have already studied the UKcosa site I was just asking for anybody that had done this in the past or present? Your information is valued (it could save me a lot of money). We did not maintain a residence in the UK

    Hi Lee,
I had the same issue a few years back.
I had actually been at boarding school for my last two years of high school in the UK so it was a bit easier.

Essentially on paper you would have to pay international fees. There is a required 3 year period in which you have to have lived in the UK preceding starting uni.

You can get out of this a couple of ways.

The most guaranteed 'legit' way would be to move here, spend a year at a local 6th form (last year of high school), sit some exams, and then apply from there to uni. Funding comes from 'LEA's' , which are local organisations. Being enrolled at a school would provide you with an 'LEA' who would then supply your funding.

The other option is to use a relatives address as your home address, I cant remember the exact way the funding will work, but I know of a couple people who have essentially 'moved in ' with their relatives and gone from there.
Let me know how you get on.

    Matt

Did you maintain any bank accounts in the UK and how many visits to the UK did you make during your time. I was in the US for 3 years prior to starting as a 'home' student in the UK. i was considered a home student because I was on a non-permenant visa (needing renewing at 5 yrs), maintained a bank account and an address (I just gave my parent's address) and visited the UK on average 2x / yr. For my LEA it came down to whether I just went there to work temporarily or whether I went there with the intention of emigrating and I just about had sufficient evidence to convince them of the former. You may want to write to each school, set out your case before them and see how they assess you. Most will give informal guidance on your status.
