going to america from england?
Hi guys just wondering about what happens after you have completed your degree in Medicine, do you have to carry on into the FY1 and FY2 at the place where you have studied or can you apply for job like back at your hometown?
secondly how much of a gap is it between finishing Uni and starting Fy1?
In alot of other professions after youve done your degree you could easily go for like a year and work in usa etc does medicine also offer that as in is it possible to like say go america for a few years then come back and slot straight back into the british system? say if you go after fy2 then come back and apply for a higher specialist training post? what would be hte best time to do that and will it put you at a disadvantage?
Is ther any way after uni that one can go abroad say to america and work there for a bit just to see what its like and then come back here an dslot back in? i wud love to work there and see what lif is like over there and was wondering if a medicine degree would allow me to do that??
ANY HELP WOULD BE AMAZING GUYS!!

The problem is that training in the U.K. is not counted in the U.S. and training gained in the U.S. is not counted in the U.K. so switching countries intermittently, in my opinion, is more hassle than it's worth. If you do this, you have to take all of the licensing exams in the U.S. (expensive and very time consuming) and, if your intention is to only be there for a year or so, that will be a waste of your time. I would only do this if you realistically want to stay here and practice.
Are you interested in research? Consider going to the U.S. for a year or two on a research fellowship after medical school is completed in the U.K. Scientific experience and publications count anywhere. When I lived in another city in New York, a cardiothoracic SHO from Manchester came out here on a Fullbright Fellowship for a two year research experience. He moved back to the U.K. and this propelled him up the ladder. Incidentally, her took Step 1 of the USMLE while he was over here and Step 2...in case he ever wants to work here clinically.

hey guys, i don't know where else to put this Q or Qs up but seems like an ok thread to ask this Q in. im at a London medical school at the moment and am planing on moving to the states. if i wanted to take the USMLE exams while at medschool would i be able to take it in the UK?
i also read that in order to be eligible for STEP 3 i would have to have gained a certification from ECFMG. I really don't know what they mean by that. could someone kindly explain please? and i was also quite curious about the time it would take on average to complete all the licensing exams...

Step 1 and Step 2CK can be taken by computer in the U.K. Step 2 CS (clinical skills) must be taken in the U.S. Gradutes from medical schools other than those in the U.S. or Canada also need to obtain the ECFMG certificate: (www.ecfmg.org). STEP 3 is usually taken after internship year in the U.S., but this policy varies by state. In actuality, you just need your medical school diploma to sit for it. For this reasons, some FMG's have been able to take STEP 3 before internship.
