UK Med/US Residency?

Hello all,

Just wondering if anyone here (writing USMLE or thinking of it) is planning to do residency in the US/Canada.

From what I've read/heard, it's much harder to get higher grades in UK schools (yes! THey are harder!). Does this affect you when you apply for US/Canadian residency? Has anyone been through it before?

I am actually interested in doing my residency in the US, as well. They put more emphasis on your USMLE scores and interviews than on the grades you make in the medical school. And I don't think the med schools in the UK are necessarily harder than those in the US. Plus, what matters more is not the actual grade, but where you stand with respect to other people in your class. You can get 90% but still be in the lowest 25 percentile, or you can get 60% and be in the top 10 percentile. They do ask for faculty recommendation and that puts grades in perspective. What I know is about 16,000 medical students graduate every year from the US medical schools, and there are 25,000 posts, so that leaves 9,000 posts for international medical graduates to fill. If you do well in the USMLE you can land a very competitive residency. Anyway, goodluck!
