I really want to come to England to study, and even possibly live there. I just want to make sure the option to come back exists. I know the USMLE will take time and effort, but I'm willing to make the sacrifice.

I guess what I'm most worried about is that apparently canadians can't get jobs/residencies in England, and also its hard to come back. So I just dont want to be in a situation where I can't do anything.

I have a british passport though, if that helps at all.

I'm from the USA, and want to go to the UK to get a degree (it's a lot faster), take the USMLEs, and come back to the usa for residency and then practice. I'd like to know which med schools focus more attention onto the pure medical sciences instead of stuff like handling patients, hospital procedures, etc. Some med schools focus on the "book work", while others focus on exposure to Uk practice. Basically, it would be pointless to go to a school that primarily focuses on primary care and the UK health system. In short, what are the best schools to go to for people wishing to practice in the usa?? Which schools land students in the best US residencies (Johns Hopkins, Mayo, etc)? Please, I need your help!!
I think you need to look into this a little more. You will notice that it is not faster in the UK. You may get everything done 10 months faster but not more. You will also have to see if you can be eligible for residency in the US(even if you do pass USMLE step 1) without an undergraduate (or at least 90 credited hours at undergraduate level), I doubt this very much. If you are desperate to come to the UK for med and also desperate to go back to the US, you will require an undergrad first, I guarantee it!

I think that a British passport can only help you in the long run, but there are certain conditions you will have to meet. Things like place of birth, or living in the UK 3 years prior to the beginning of you degree etc...
As for going to the US or Canada after u complete your UK med, I would have to say that the US is a much more realistic approach. Canada is notoriously unforgiven to its own citizens going abroad to study medicine. Get ready to start looking into the USMLE step 1 as well as the MCCEE from your 2nd and 3rd year on. Don't leave till you graduate, u will waste time and money.
If you need more info, let me know, I have looked into these options quite q bit.

wow this is a v interesting thread, def thinking twice about my uni choices now and what course structures are best. cos ive always had this idea of going to canada, even though many have warned me its near impossible, or the US.
pbl does seem to be a cop out of the lecturers, and giving students a free reign over their studies, and strongly reminds me of my alevel experiences did no work for most of the year at all as teachers didnt care and the focus was on 'self learning'
    BARTS 2007!

    ~~Applying for 07 entry~~

    Barts unconditional
    Leeds unconditional
    HYMS- unconditional
Newcastle- unsuccessful (dumpy uni neway )
