Any recommendations on books to buy for first years?

Thanks,
Conor

One of the second years posted a list a little while back - I think it's in the "UL Queries Here" thread.

Just to give you an idea:

Clinical Skills - Cox, Ropper (2006), Talley, O'Connor (2006)
Clinical Med - Kumar and Clarke 5th edition (think this is most recent)
Davidson's Principles & Practice of Med -- (nearly everyone in the class owns a copy of Kumar and Clarke and the american version was much cheaper in the on campus bookshop - if you don't mind estrogen and epinephrine! - don't know if they have figured this out in the bookshop - It's O'Mahony's on campus if you want to try calling)
Pharmacology - Rang and Dale (6th ed)
Physiology - Vander or Guyton and Hall (11th edition) - Guyton is more detailed than Vander but I don't know your background. Vander is a nice text too.
Anatomy - The recommended texts are Moore and Dalley (clinically oriented anatomy) and the other is Last's Anatomy. Grey's anatomy for students is not on this list but is the one that most of the class own - this is quite heavily stocked in the library.

To start you out an anatomy and clinical medicine and clinical skills would help alot and you can build on that. As the year went on alot of books were moved into the short loan so basically just to use in the library. So even though I have one clinical med book I could go check out a good few more in there. Also most of the specialist books like paediatrics, cardiology, dermatology live in the short loan too.

If you have any more q's don't hesitate!

Good tip is for the class as a whole to come together and bulk buy on books and stethoscopes etc...we really shot ourselves in the foot last year.....also Amazon.com is great for buying books...a lot cheaper esp coz the dollar is low against the euro at the mo. U could save up to 50% in some cases

I just got a mental image of a pack of marauding med students decked out in matching raincoats, Spanish student styley, stripping the shelves of a bookshop.

Sounds like a very good idea - just so long as nobody decides to place a bulk order for those fancy electronic stethoscopes that cost more than my car.

You're not really off with that image.. For the first couple of weeks the freshers in RCSI all have the same laptop bags (until they get sick of looking like the clone army), and packs of them regularly descend on Clarendon Medical and strip them of the primary text for whatever subject is currently terrorizing them
