Are you studying SK277 at the OU?
I'm Mike and I live in York. I was so pleased that the OU do these courses- I'm doing SK277, Exploring Science and a couple of 10 credit modules. But my offer for UEA is only based on the Biology course.
Definitely given me a renewed focus to get the grades!!

I am indeed doing SK277, in fact I'm just in the process of trying to cut out some words from TMA3! My offer is also based on me getting 60% in SK277. I thought this was fine because my TMAs have been ok so far, but apparently you have to get the same mark in your TMAs and the exam to achieve that grade... i.e. it's not an average of the two. This has scared me a bit because the exam's only two weeks ahead of my thesis deadline for my masters, but I guess I'll just have to prioritise. Also, the names they give the grades are really weird, like 'level three grade average' is 55% or something...

Are you enjoying the course? I'm a big fan of the OU too. I was considering doing one of their chemistry summer schools but they're quite pricey. Anyway, good luck with your studies!

Whilst I cannot guarantee the accuracy I did find a link to such a list for first year UEA med students on amazon Amazon.co.uk: UEA first year medicine reccommended texts. Like I said though, I don't know how old this is, but if it helps use it.
    Hi guys,

The UEA reading list is very extensive and you don't really need to buy everything. For the first year I'd suggest just getting the basics; a clinical medicine text (Kumar & Clarke or Davidsons), Rang Pharmacology and an anatomy text (although you won't be doing any anatomy until after Christmas). Don't be too hasty in buying your books, Module one is quite a gentle intro to medicine so you don't need to arm yourself with texts. Also, at MedMart you can get some free books etc so it's definately worth waiting.
With regard to timetables you'll most likely have to wait until you start as you won't have access to the Portal, which is where our timetables (and everything else) are kept! If it helps you're timetable follows a standard format: Monday/Tuesday - Lectures/Seminars, Wed - Anatomy/IPL, Thurs - Primary Care, Fri - PBL/Wrap-up.
Hope this info helps a little bit!

    Hi everyone

Well i ve been reading and there is quite a diverse array of people coming to this course. Im a gap year student living in london now but moving to south africa in a few weeks. I guess i woudl say i come from switzerland though as i lived there the longest and did all my exams and stuff there.

Have any of you people not done any chemistry at all?
cus im doin this course and although it says chemistry is not needed i was just wondering how true that statement is?
so ye any students or people who know the course know if chemistry really isnt needed?

    thanks!

    Hi everybody!

As introductions have started I might as well proceed with mine! My name is Pedro and I'm from Portugal. I received a conditional offer from UEA last week. I'm required to complete my Master's Degree, witch I shall in May (unless some extraordinary event happens!).

I have another offer and am still waiting for another reply so I'm not quit sure if I will accept the spot on UEA...

Some facts about me... well, I'm a dentist and my goal is maxilo-facial surgery, hence medicine. Quit likely I shall be the oldest student as I'm 36, so if you find someone from the Jurassic in your class it's probably me...

I'm married and have two childreen (as you would expect from a guy born in the XIX century...).

    Comments anyone?

Cheers for the info belkins. I've already got a fair few textbooks from my first degree so I'm hoping to weed out the ones that won't be useful and get some of the ones you've mentioned. My main concern at the moment comes from a call to the fees office, where I spoke to a Peter Courage. He informed me that when the cap on tuition fees is lifted, they can't guarantee they won't go up for current students :s I'm not sure as to the extent of your insight, but if you could shed any light on the subject it would be much appreciated.

Hi James, I'm afraid I don't know much about what would happen with the fees. I'm a graduate myself, the fees went up to £3000 during my first degree however the university didn't charge me any extra (just the £1200 I was already paying). I'd imagine that the fees would be consistent throughout i.e. if you start paying £3000 then you'd continue paying that regardless of if they lift the cap. Like I say i don't really know but if they did raise the fees for current students then there would be a lot of angry students and I'd imagine many would have to drop out as they won't be able to afford it!

Hi Ben, thanks for the guidance. Which year are you in? any more golden nuggets of advice/info that would prove useful for the first year?

    Hey guys!

I'm Arsa from Toronto, Canada. I am currently completing my grade 12. I have an interest in medical research and cardiology. So I'm planning to do something along those lines in the future.

I had a bit of a concern. On the WHO website, on the world directory of medical schools, UEA's name isn't there. I understand how the medicine program is fairly new and the list on the website was last update during 2007. But I'm wondering if anyone else had that issue?

On a last note, hope to see you all at UEA this sept!
