I was hoping some of the current students could advise me on a couple of things about living in halls. I know it's ages away but I'm getting so excited I've started planning already!!
Firstly, I know the hospital isn't that far and would be fairly easy to walk to, but was wondering how you get around when you go to other placements in the community?? UEA don't seem to be too keen on people having cars at uni do they! Did any of you have a car with you?? Is it impossible to take one with you??
Secondly, (and slightly mundane), if you have to go to the launderette to do your washing, are ironing boards provided in halls? Or is ironing not in keeping with studentism??
Hi Xahha,
Im a student at UEA, but not a med student until sep this year (all being well). I hope I can help you with some of the stuff you say in your message though.
I brought a car with me and applied for a surplus permit. When one came up, I paid a one off fee and that was the end of it. The parking permit lady is very nice, but the security guards who enforce the rules are generally a bunch of arses - so watch out for them. Challenging then, but not altogether impossible to have a car on campus. Current med students can advise you on this better, but I believe the uni may provide transport to placements if a vast distance away. Couldnt be positive on that though. If I make my offer, Ill try and drive to my own placements.
Ironing boards not provided as standard. Very much a preference as to whether you do it or not.
Yeah I'm hoping I can take a car. I have a few friends doing MED at PMS and they reckon having your own car is a big plus when it comes to travelling around all those placements. I guess if people are in pairs/groups ofr placements though, you could always share a car/taxi.
Am I right in thinking you've been in halls this year??
How far is the parking from the hall and is it possible to keep a car up there if you can't get a permit??
Your right in thinking ive been in halls this year. From my hall (waveney ie. skanky hall with good atmosphere) its about 200 metres. I tried to park on a grass verge outside after everyone had arrived in September and was promptly clamped!!!
But yeah. if you can blag it enough with the lovely lady in the car parking office you can get a permit
I don't think you're allowed (well, you're not supposed to!) bring a car onto campus unless you live within a few miles radius. You will not need a car for placements - nobody drives unless they live off campus. Mini-buses are provided for the GP practice day once a week and a coach takes us to the James Paget Hospital. There has only been 1 daywhere we needed to make our own way to Hellesdon (mental health) hospital but there are frequent buses that go through the university straight there. You walk to the N&N.
Ironing boards - i think these must vary as I know Norfolk Terrace have a drying room with ironing boards etc.

Anyone know if the Village has ironing boards? And what else I ought to bring? Should really have paid more attention on the open days. Which reminds me - Jonny, you asked me if I was coming to the open day. What open day???

I emailed him and he said he needs a letter from the school, but was quite nice. And Dad has asked for me to be put in for special consideration in my exams so things are going OK. Still haven't had any health forms though - think I should email him again? He's probably sick of me by now!
By the looks of other reapplicants it seems retaking the ukcat can cause your score to jump 50 points. So we should be fine reapplying to warwick next year. It's just annoying we have to wait another...
He apologized but I really should have! So far I've only heard about rejections probably means they are giving out their offers later. Imperial was kind of my first choice because it's very good and...
