AR - do you need to 'get' the rule to score OK

I seem to be finding these more difficult than I expected as I thought I had a fairly analytical mind and always scored well in IQ tests.

Anyway, question is. Do you find you are scoring OK without explicitly understanding the rule? I've had a few of these that I've scored 4 out of 5 seemingly on intuition. Could be luck, I'm hoping it's not!

No - on my first sitting I guessed all but 1 of them and got about 700 on that section.

I just did my UKCAT this morning. I wasn't even sure of ONE correct answer in the AR and got 700! A few I guessed a rule.... sort of, but mainly I had to just guess (use my intuition?). Like you I score well in IQ tests usually but the AR in UKCAT baffles me!

Does anybody know of a good (prefereably free!) resource to practice AR. I already have the 600Q book and even after all those examples I am still really slow at seeing the pattern if I see it at all. Also will try the UKCAT online tests and I have gone through another book that I had from when I first sat it in 2008! Thanks in advance,

The book I got it from (sorry it's not free) was How to Master the UKCAT: Over 700 Practice Questions for the United Kingdom Clinical Aptitude Test Elite Students Series: Amazon.co.uk: Mike Bryon, Jim Clayden, Chris John Tyreman: Books. However, I don't know of any free resources, but the beginning of chapters in the 600q book and the one I've outlined above do give good ideas of what to look for, and the more you go over these criteria, the easier I find it becomes.

Don't get too disheartened by it all, a lot of people don't get the rule in the exam and just use intuition and still get spectacular scores!

I need help! I don't understand this at all!
AR - do you need to 'get' the rule to score OK-need-help.jpg

    Solution

Set A Three squares, and circle on the left. Ignore triangle.
Set B Three squares, and circle on the right. Ignore triangle.

that's the answer. But does it make sense? No!
