    ukcat in october

I have booked my ukcat test for October 8th 2010. I have about a month to revise for the test. I just wanted to ask if this is enough time to prepare for the test and get a good score.

That is plenty of time, I did all of my practise in about 3 days and scored 710 avg so it should be fine.

I'm in the same situation firestar. As an Arts graduate coming back to Science academia after 13 years the 600 book has scared the crap out of me! Feel like I need to retake GCSE Maths before I can even tackle the QR section! Ah well, might just treat this year's test as a dry run- not expecting expect to achieve the holy grail 650 score- and see it as good preparation for my 2012 application. Good luck with your study- I'll let you know if I come across anything especially helpful.

I feel the same as you. The skills i use from day to day work vs answering exam questions are hugely different. I would recommend the following books in addition to the 600Q:

    1. Thinking Skills - Cambridge University Press (good for all sections )
    2. Simple Statistics for Social Sciences (QR)
    3. Rapid Reading - by Peter Kump (VR)
    4. A very short introduction to Logic (good for all sections)
(there maybe there are better books eg logic for dummies)

Ah that's really kind of you, thank you
I think the Maths exercises are my weakest, would I be right in thinking that the Simple Statistics book be the most helpful for that area?
Are you applying for 2011 entry too persianmd?
I'm thinking of the Grad courses at Southampton and KCL (if my UKCAT score is good enough- doubtful!), still looking for other Grad courses that accept Arts graduates...

You're welcome. That book is good for stats/probabilities etc, but not as a straight primer of maths. If you feel you are weak then you may need to look at a GSCE revision guide as well as some practice test. I agree that the QR is difficult, however the calculations are simple if you get to know them. The best thing to do is get the ground work then practice the hell out the book. Dont finish when you run out of questions - buy another UKCAT practice questions book and keep going through that as well. Just ensure that the questions are of comparable level of difficulty.

Im taking the UKCAT this year for two reasons. First as a mock in preparation for 2012 entry, secondly to demonstrate my committment to the *exteremely few* people I know in the NHS as I hope this will show them I am serious and make them more open to having me running around behind them for a couple of weeks when I need to do some shadowing

On a side note, i dont think that Southampton and KCL are the easiest of GEP schemes to get into. Have a look at MedSchoolsOnline.co.uk. They have a GEP course comparison on their website so you can find out which is best suited for you.

You can use jobtestprep.co.uk for online practice (it's cool because you start your practice immediately), I practice with their material. You definitely have enough time - just make sure you use it properly and practice plenty. Luck!
