UKCAT...did i just ruin my chances?
Basically, I got 560 640 620 660 which averages to 620.
I seriously think that its not good enough and that now I'm at a serious disadvantage when it comes to admissions.
Otherwise my stats are:
GCSE: 10 a* 1a
AS: aaab
I've done work experience at the a&e dept, with autistic children, 8 months volunteering in a residential care home and working with paralysed children.
Problem is, with my UKCAT score...are they just going to look this over?

Hello everyone,
I am a second year biomedical student hoping to apply for 2010 undergrad medicine as grad is very competitive. I have loads of experiences 6 months hospital voulntary, 1 week general surgery, 1 week gp, 1 week outpatients, 2 yrs part-time pharmacy and 3 months dental nurse. However, I am still worried I know I can get 2:1 in biomedical sciences but my A-level results were really bad CDDE, GCSE's 7B's 1C & D. I had to do a foundation course to get into biomedical sciences in that i got 4A'S & 4 B's.
I have never done UKCAT before and mine is in 3 weeks I am extremely worried as I don't get AR...I got 600book and another book but I find it so hard.
Does any one mind sharing some tips on how you practised, how long and how you managed the real test. I really want to get above 650 to stand a chance.
What unis will accept me with thise grades excluding the ukcat which i haven't done yet.
I appreciate all your helps. Thanks

it is above average but from what ive seen most people are hitting the 650+ mark so thats why im worried.
i hope to apply to ucl (bmat i know), manchester, nottingham and edinburgh.
i know edinburgh take the ukcat into count for 8% of their admission criteria but i dont know what manchester and notts do...whether they have a cut off mark with it for interview or whether theyre like edinburgh.
i emailed both man and notts so hopefully i might get an answer

I think Mancs uses a ranking system to decide who gets an interview and take the top x%. Notts probably use a ranking system too. Very competitive unis you're going for there; if you are reconsidering any of them because of your UKCAT score, perhaps this link will help a little The Official "Oh NOES MY UKCAT SCORE SUCKS" the end is nigh Thread - The Student Room Good luck.

Lol the title of that thread/link sounds awful - but I was pretty disappointed after my UKCAT score - I practiced like hell!

I did my UKCAT last year to get into med school this year and got 615 average (flopped the abstract reasoning with 510 and got under 700 in the rest). My 4 med schools were liverpool, soton, UCL and BSMS - of those only BSMS and soton use the UKCAT. I was given an interview at BSMS with my UKCAT score, then an offer, and now im going there this year!

Im sure at certain unis the UKCAT plays a greater role, but if you are really worried then maybe you should try applying to BSMS - they dont seem to give much preference to it.
Best of luck you guys!
(Oh yeah, i got 6A*s and 4As at GCSE and AAAB at AS (B in biology), but managed to get AAAA at A2 after some resitting

Hey, don't worry about the stupid ukcat. They are most definitely not going to overlook your work experience - that's the most important bit, or at least it should be if the uni knows what it's doing! Don't forget, it's not how much work experience you've done but how you express one or two of them. Avoid writing a personal statement that just reads like a list.

Hey there, don't worry. I can't think of what unis you could apply to off hand but check out Medschoolsonline - A Guide to Getting into Medical School in the UK. In my opinion though, you'd be much better off if you applied when you graduate because your degree will overule your A-levels. But definitely look into the unis to apply this year as well.
