I've got GAMSAT to worry about too - I am hoping this early UKCAT will at least give me more time to prepare for that (September 18th, 2 month gap) - should be a nightmare!

Also any recommendations for books as i desperately need to start revising

Finally is there a limit to how many times you can take the UKCAT in a year?
    this is my first time

    Thanks in advance

Applied for undergraduate 2010 (A100) at:

Your message illustrates exactly why practice is important. A big part of your success at the UKCAT rests on learning to use onlyn the information that you need and not all that is given to you. If you have looked at the UKCAT website, you will see that some questions do give a lot of information and in fact, on this very forum, some people have warned about the fact that the verbal reasoning texts are longer than in many practice books.

I would say that it is almost normal that you are not doing so well if you have just got the book and have just started to practise. However, once you have been through a few hours of practice, you will find that your brain will learn to cope with the speed of the exam. Use the book and whatever other preparation tools you have to get used to the different formats of the questions. It is possible that the book may be a bit challenging but it is best to prepare that way rather than having an easy ride during your preparation, only to get a massive shock at the exam.

24 days is a long way to go still and I am sure you only need a third of that to do well. Just keep going and you will get the hang of it.

I personally bought all the books available for my son (I work as a consultant in the NHS) and have found that the 600 UKCAT practice book was the best one available. For a start it is the most complete and has both practice and mock exam. But more importantly the others are too easy for the exam and therefore will not necessarily prepare you well. You will feel confident and proud of yourself but this will not necessarily translate into positive results at the exam. None of the questions in the "600 Practice questions" book are actually that difficult but, as you pointed out, it is a matter of trying to do everything within a specific time limit. But eh, that is what everyone finds hard at the UKCAT and that is why the exam is challenging.

It is also worth remembering that the scoring system is strange at the UKCAT so for example, experience has shown that it is possible to get a score of 700 in the quantitative reasoning by doing only 50% of the exercises. So, as you can see, there must be some allowance in the marking for the time challenge.

    Good luck.
