Get Into Med School - 600 Questions

What do you think of this book? Is it worth buying and is it anything like the real exam questions?

    Thanks,
    Danielle

Is it worth buying the 600 UKCAT Practice Quesions book if I have already bought the following 2?:

How to Pass the UKCAT: Unbeatable Practice for Success in the 2009 United Kingdom Clinical Aptitude Test: Amazon.co.uk: Mike Bryon, Jim Clayden: Books

Passing the UK Clinical Aptitude Test UKCAT and BMAT 2009 Student Guides to University Entrance: Felicity Taylor: Amazon.co.uk: Rosalie Hutton, Glenn Hutton: Books

I've seen the 600 UKCAT Practice questions book be mentioned quite a few times on here by people and people seem to be recommending it quite good. Is it actually quite good or is it overrated?

I just bought it from amazon (£17 inc postage) and 1st impressions show it seems to be a good book. My UKCAT is one week away, so going for last minute familiarising me with the style again, and felt that I didnt have enough examples from the "Passing the UKCAT and BMAT" book that I already have.

Will let you know once iv used it a bit more if it helps at all.

Yes, it's still worth it. The 600 question book is the best out of those.

Can anyone who has done the UKCAT this year clarify how the 600 book compares to the actual exam questions?

Has the format changed this year from last year? If so what are the differences?

    Cheers

I did exam yesterday and used the 600 book for preparation. The VR felt easier in the exam, but because Id practiced them it really did help. The rest was about the same difficult wise.. As long as you are familiar with the format (UKCAT website practice is a necessity) then thats the trickiest thing.

    Good luck

I've sat the UKCAT this year after using this book. I posted the following in another thread and thought some of it might be helpful.

I used the 600 questions book and recently took the UKCAT, my thoughts on each section are below:

Verbal Reasoning - I had a very mixed experience with the practice questions, some went well, some went less well. It seems a fairly accurate example though, paragraphs are roughly the same length as the test. I did better in the exam than the practice questions with a score of 700. I answered every question but guessed the last two with seconds left.... I decided "can't tell" was the right answer for both in the sense that I didn't have time to answer them so couldn't tell what the real answer was.

Quantitative Reasoning - I struggled loads on this section in the build up to the exam. On the mock exam in the book I answered just over half in the time limit then only got about half of the ones I answered right. my finding was that the practice questions in the book are on par with the hardest questions you will come accross in the exam. The real exam includes some questions that can be done quicker. I was able to answer all questions in this section this time and scored 830.

Abstract Reasoning - This section drives me mad in the practice. I struggle to find the rules in practice but it seems to come together on the day and I could find the rules better. The questions don't seem overall harder in the exam so I can't quite place what it is, maybe I just react well to the pressure of the exam? It is possible that the rules in the practice questions are more complex and include more conditions than the real questions. I'm not sure if this is the case though and the practice questions in this book are great preparation. I answered all questions, though guessed a couple in the middle and gave random answers for the last 5 as I was about to run out of time. I somehow managed 870.

Decision Analysis - This section went well in practice and I got almost all of them. It's possible that I got a bit complacent as a result as I found this section in the exam harder than I expected. The questions in the book for this section are great for explaining how to deal with this section. I did answer all questions in the time limit and managed a score of 740.

RE: time limits, don't freak out too much about these. I timed out on all but one section in my practice. On previous attempts at this exam I only ever finished 1 or 2 sections max, still got respectable results. I think experience does seem to help and as you answer questions you develop better stratergies. So practice, practice and practice again.
