Quantative Reasoning... How is that possible?
Hi, I'm sitting my UKCAT next thursday and I started practising for the Quantitative Reasoning bit today. How the hell am I supposed to be able to answer 40 pretty complex questions (they're not hard, they just involve a lot of calculations) in 20 minutes?! How am I supposed to sum 20 different numbers and calculate their average over and over again with only 30 seconds for each question, without a calculator?
I need advice, and I need them quickly... Because I'm freaking out, I don't think I'll be able to do this....... AAARGH! Help...?
And also... what's the average grade on the UKCAT?

Without a calculator? You get a basic calculator in the test so you should practice using one!
QR is notorious for being practically impossible to finish, do not panic! We were/are all in the same boat. A tip is to guess those questions that are too long to read/solve and try and focus on getting as many short questions right as possible, when in doubt or running out of time....GUESS!
The real test is not usually as bad as the practice UKCAT one. Deep breaths, you will do fine.
Average UKCAT scores are between 500-700 with the average of the average so to speak being 600.
Chill, calm down and take it easy. It usually turns out better than expected, best thing to do if you have 1 minute left is guess your heart out.
I wish you all the best

yeah i no what you mean with the whole QR thing. my advice would be to do as many qs as you can and then guess the rest. when i was doing mine i got to about q20 and then i had to guess the rest, and the QR section turned out to be my best. oh and, in my exam at least, the QR questions were a lot easier than those on the ukcat website. dont panic im sure you'll be grand!! hope that helped

Thank you, I feel much more at ease now... but, when you say you get a basic calculator, is it given to you by the exam centre or is it "built-in" the exam itself?
thanks again!!!

They used to give you one of those calculators thats on the computer but thats been dropped now. The centre will give you a basic calculator before you start your test, you could always take a basic one (not a scientific one) along with you just in case but I am sure they will provide it for you Good luck!

thank you SOOOOOOOOO much!!!! I was panicking already, because I'm not from the UK, so no one else that I know is doing the UKCAT. So I was like "What the hell?!!!! British people are freakishly quick at calculations!". So I was really really afraid. But, now that I am reassured, I guess it's back to work for me.
Thanks again you guys

OK, so, I practised this subtest and, in 17 minutes (the time they recommend for 30 questions) I answered 25 of them and got 11 right. Is that good/average/bad?

I only got to question 18 on that subtest in 20 minutes. I forgot how many I answered correctly, but it wasn't many.
I sat the UKCAT today... Quantitative was nothing like the practice. I managed to solve up to question 36, guessed the rest, and got... 850
Don't worry lah!
