Sucky UKCAT results anyone?
Helllloooo all you wonderful little things...
I do not really know why Im making this thread. But I have a UKCAT exam on the 30th Sept and from the practice stuff on the UKCAT site and the book...I SUCK!
And hence I am sitting here depressed...just finished second year of a life sciences degree, topping the freaking year...but might not be able to get into med cos of this stupid stupid exam which makes me look even dumber.
So...anyone else finding theyre in the same boat more or less of low UKCAT grades or potentially low ones
?

Hi aitch,
Completely agree with you, my preparation is not what I would like to call going swimmingly!!! I have a first in pharmacy, which very few people manage, and it is so annoying that this test seems to count for more than the four years of hard work that I put in at uni. Are there any particular areas you have trouble with? personally, I am ok with verbal reasoning and decision analysis, but QR and AR are areas I really struggle with.
Anyway, these things are sent to try us, so dont let it get you down and keep up the hard work, Im sure your dream of being a doctor will come true

lol...decision analysis is the one i am good at. so far i have just worked through the book...and verbal reasoning and abstract are what I suck at majorly. But the maths in the book went fine...but the short test of ukcat site, told me i suckd in all except Decision.
But i shall try out the full online test after more online prep i think. tonight i gotta finalise the personal statement.
And we have our UKCAT on same date! Where u sitting yours?

hi. I did my UKCAT yesterday and was worried before hand but to be honest its not that bad. Its harder then the short practice test online but easier and more straight forward than the long practice test. Alot of unis, from what I believe, only use the UKCAT as a very minor part of the application process however some do only interview above a certain cut off point, e.g newcastle which last year the cut off point was an average of 600. You will be fine my advice would be do some practice questions, this is very beneficial especially in AR as you get to see more pattern combinations, and try and be as relaxed as possible in the exam.

Oh and by the way steve well done on you first! That is amazing. How are you finding pre-reg? Im just about to go into my fourth year of pharmacy and currently applying to hospital pre-reg places (as well as UCAS).

Thanks very much mark I was very pleased with it. Prereg is going ok thanks, but its confirming that pharmacy isnt for me and medicine is where my true vocation lies, if its patient contact you want then pharmacy is a bit frustrating to be honest, but if you have the aptitude for it its a great career and Im very grateful to pharmacy for the skills that it has given me.
so which pharmacy school are you at, are you applying for hospital prereg, it gives you good clinical experience and definitely puts you at an advantage for applying to medicine.
Good luckSteven

I got a low UKCAT score with an average of 538. I'm not alone, despite what the "evidence" says in the UKCAT results poll.
It is important and does dent your application if you do badly, but it really isn't the be all and end all of your application - infact grades, PS and the dark horse of the referee statement are all of more importance in the whole application process in my opinion. Although this does depend on where you apply. Some universities decide that fitting silly shapes into patterns, and decoding dodgy codes are what make a good doctor.
Anyway, rant over. My advice would be to do your best and not to 'over-worry' about it.Third Year Medical Student: Keele
