    another UKCAT score thread

    Hello, new here.

    Took my UKCAT today:
    V-700
    Q-890
    A-690
    D-740
    Avg-755

I'm a bit confused about how the score works. I finished VR and DA with a few minutes so even went back to check them, i.e. think I did ok there. But for the QR questions, they had so much reading to do that I only finished 33 out of 40. Tried to randomly guess the rest but ran out of time because of the stupid "you haven't scrolled to the bottom" box!!

So now I have this almost perfect QR score for what I thought was my worst section! Assuming I got 32/40 raw marks, does this mean you can get a score of 900 for >80%, or was I lucky and just happened to guess everything correctly? Any idea what raw mark corresponds to scores of 700?

Another thing: it says that most people who take the test will get 500-700 and a reference group gets 600 on average. Who is this reference group.. or how did they know that a hypothetical reference group would get 600 before the first ever sitting of the test? Did they trial the questions on a huge number of people before actually using them? Does most mean 50% or a standard deviation or what.. and also, don't you have to be somewhat bright to even consider applying to medicine.. so does this average range represent the whole population or potential medics? If its the whole population then I think it's a bit misleading to say most people..and anyway if unis use cutoffs then won't my score be a bit closer to the average score of my "competition"?

Sorry for the barrage of questions.. and thanks to anyone who can enlighten me!

Just congratulate yourself on a decent score,no point in trying to second guess the "if's and why's"

Just kick back and be rest assured you've done it

aye! if the rest of ure application is top quality and has no weaknesses, then ure sure to get an interview.

in terms of the ukcat on its own, theres no uni that u'll be a poor or borderline candidate with that score. its very very good

I'm jealous...I am so so jealous right now. I will now spend my summer constructing a dubious plan to cut down the competition for med school.

I had a similar experience (though not to as high a level as boincview). I felt like i completely bombed the QR, i ended up guessing about 12 questions due to time constraints but i still came out with a 750 score?!
The rest of the test went well for me with a 707.5 average, with only AR letting me down (610) though even that is above the average apparently? Im wondering whether the supposed 600 average might just be a bit higher this year once everyones sat the test as a lot of people seem to be getting 700+ on these forums.

Oh, and bigdog, theres not a lot you can do. Just read through the UKCAT book and do the online tests and make sure your fresh on the day. Knowing a list of themes to look for in the AR section was useful for me and is probably the only reason i scraped 610 as i'm awful with that kind of thing.
Just stay relaxed, move quickly where you can and if a giant scary question comes up early on just mark it for review and come back later (then guess it if you have no time like me ).
    Newcastle Fresher 09!
