    Smile Abstract Reasoning (I think!)

    Hi!
Can somebody help me!!!??? I have just practiced the abstract reasoning section of the UKCAT (I think it was AR, the section with the shapes! ) and I REALLY don't understand! Are you supposed to see if the sqaure has shapes in it similar to the shapes in the A+B parts? Or do you see if the shape given can fit into a sequence of A or B??? Please help me, I'm taking the UKCAT on Tuesday and failed miserably in this section in my practice! Thanks!

The point of it is to fit the "test shapes" into either A, B or neither. So for an over simplified example if set A consisted of 6 white triangles and set B consisted of 6 black squares, the questions would be like this:

    1) A black square - Answer: Set B
    2) A white triangle - Answer: Set A
    3) A white circle - Answer: Neither

    Get it?

I've got my test on tuesday too

Type UKCAT into the search on here. There's loads of pages that offer links.

    Good luck

Thanks for that! Just been looking on the answer sheet and trying to work out where I went wrong! So you have to look at:
    A) What the shapes are
    B) Where they are in relation to each other
    C) And if set A or B have any of these properties?

Sorry, I don't know why I said mine was on Tuesday, it's on Wednesday at 10.30, obv the stress is getting to me already!!!

It's a bit more complex than that. It can be as simple as naming shapes or as complex as axis of rotation of the shape in the bottom right hand corner. Anything can come up, but just keep in mind that you've got to look at the sets and their intra-relationship (relationship between the shapes in every box of the set) rather than inter-relationship (the relationship between the sets (A and B) and between the test shapes). Only once you have decided how you're going to classify the shapes within the sets should you actually move on to placing the test shapes in A/B/neither.

    Hope this helps

Oooo thanks, that makes so much more sense than the way I did it! I'm going to have another go at them again 2moz and see if I've improved.
On a side note does anyone recommend buying a UKCAT book like, 2days b4 the exam, or is it 2 late?

So look, if you call the set on the left A and the set on the right B, see if you can get how it's supposed to work. I'm not claiming these are at the level of the UKCAT, they may be eaiser or harder, but just to get it across the kind of things you should be looking for.

Can you work it out? I'll come back in a bit if you reply and tell you how it works if you haven't done it.

Thanks Arch_Angel for doing all this, I really appreciate it!

    Ok:
Set A:has a large shape with a smaller shaded shape inside it and 2 smaller shapes around
Set B: hmmm, can't see much of a pattern here, they each have circles in..??? sorry, no idea, lol

shape 1: Set A bcuz it has the same properties, big shape, smaller shaded one inside, 2 samll ones outside

shape 2: is it neither A or b?

shape 3: well it has one shape inside another but the middle shape isn't shaded so I'd go 4 neither but I'll just have another look and post another reply if anything comes to me!

Thankyou soooooo much, ur the best!
