2005 Last Year for Graduate 5-Year
Hey all,
I am in my second year at King's and I am now applying for 5 year courses for med. Several unis have told me that this is the last year that graduates will be able to apply for the 5 year course and in fact Nottingham are actively discouraging graduate applicants to their 5 year course this year, they say that places are reserved for international graduates. Some unis are saying that they will double the number of places on their 4 year course, but this will serverely reduce the number of places available to graduates!
Does anyone else know anything about this?

I can only speak for George's - at the moment they have 190 places on the 5 year course and 70 on the GEP; at least 10% of the places on the 5 year course usually go to graduates. The tentative plan is that from 2007 the numbers on the GEP will increase to 140 and the numbers on the 5 year course will be reduced to 110-140. While this means more places for graduates, it means they'll be offering very few or no places on the 5 year course to graduates, which makes perfect sense; they need to reserve the 110-140 for school leavers.

Nottingham told someone on the forum, a while ago, that as they offer GEM for graduates, they will no longer be accepting them onto the 5 year programme.

Hey,
Nottingham say that they won't accept graduates this year.
St Georges said that this the last year that graduates will be able to apply to the 5 Year course.
I will ring around a few other universities to see who else will be following this trend. If it is happening to two major universities then it is likely to be happening at most if not all others.
I'll keep you guys and girls updated

I agree, it should be advertised on their website. I have not seen anything on the Nottingham website which suggests this. It even says in their 2006 prospectus that you need a minimum of a 2:1 to apply.

OMG! I didn't know of this! This really needs to be publicised more! So does this mean more places for undergraduates on the 5 year courses, and that postgraduates have to go for the 4 year? Good luck to all those applying!

I have just been to a St Georges open day today and they confirmed that this is the last year they will be accepting graduates onto their 5 Year course. Nottingham told me that they weren't taking UK graduates this year over the phone, it was the only way I found out! They are accepting international graduate because of the money.... gypsies
