03-05-2006, 03:46 PM #3I applied to both U.S. and Canadian medical schools (British citizen living in the U.S. for the past few years). I was offered an interview at the U of T last year and a couple of U.S. schools. Only two or three Canadian medical schools accept internationals and they reserve just 10 places. Toronto and McGill are the most popular. American medical schools have more places for internationals, but they require that your underdraduate degree be completed in the U.S. or Canada; if it's not, it almost impossible to gain entry to medical school there. In either country, you will receive no financial aid as an international, and you're not eligible for the same loans that locals are Tuition ranges from $20-40K/yr for internationals in Canada and it's 30-40K/yr in the U.S..

I can give some stats about acceptance in CA from a report i found online from the Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada: in the 2006-07 entering year, there were a total of 10,673 applicants with a success rate of 25% (people receiving at least 1 offer of admission). more specifically for TO, there were 2751 applicants to and only 207 were offered admissions and went on to register in the 06-07 year.
at the university of TO med school, there was an entering class of 224 (just this september, 08-09 class), of which 7 spots were for international students. although they accept a min. of 3.6/4.0 GPAs, the average for the 06-07 entering class was 3.87. I believe for the 08-09 entering class was a little higher at 3.90/4.0. tuition is expensive enough for Canadian residents at ~$17,000/yr, but if you're not a resident then you're looking at $44,100 (for visa students).
so yeah, it really is difficult to get in to TO med school. it's actually the hardest to get in to in all of canada according to the stats. even though they have the largest entering classes of any other school here, all those new students have really high GPAs or really impressive resumes, or both.
i'm not a med student yet. i'll be applying in two years time and i'm really hoping to get in to TO, but who knows. there are other schools after all. in the end i just want to get into ONE medical school in CA, whichever it may be, becuase like it was mentioned it's extremely difficult (like almost impossibly) to practice here unless you do your school here.

does anyone have any tips for getting into the TO medical school? GPA, i've heard research is good to have for them, extracurriculars, etc. do they prefer certain types of extracurriculars or some type of research. i know they like to see "breadth and depth" in an applicant's courses and they dont penalize you for taking harder courses where your marks may not be as high ie that's why they drop your lowest three grades overall. if i do research in an area other than what my undergrad specialty is, is that alright? from my perspective it just enhances my "well-roundedness". also, does TO prefer students with an already-completed undergrad? for example, most friends i have apply in the beginning of their fourth year, so that means only three years of undergrad have been completed. so does TO prefer applictants who've already graduated or those who are in the process of graduating?
whoever posts a reply, thanks!
