For those starting September 2010
Is it too early for this thead?
Couple of topics that might be useful.....
1. Accomodation - where is best to live
2. Pre-read - anyone buying text books - thinking anatomy (any one selling any second hand?)
3. Accepting and rejecting - where do people stand...i'm sure people waiting for offers might like to know
4. Open day...anyone going?
I'll get it started
No idea about where to live, thinking a house rather than halls though???
Pre-read, thinking anatomy text, but not sure if we should just wait until we get there
I'm definately accepting, pulled out of the Notts process today so i've confirmed my place
Taking my mum to the open day in June, so she can have a nose around, thought it might be nice to visit the place under less stressful circumstances2nd time medic applicant

The students that showed us round on the interview day def said there was some kind of extra open day for those of us with offers in the summer, whether it’s the June one on the website I don’t know but assume the paperwork will confirm all this when it arrives next week…
Def going for a house over halls, know of a couple of friends of friends that are in the 2nd yr so going to try to speak to them over the next week or so about what they recommend.. And considering doing the same as you with regards to Notts… would have to be very impressive to steer me away from Swansea, got a great feeling about the place from visiting for interview!

Yeah, i heard about the open day aswell, i was going to wait for the paperwork, i figured that there would be info about it in that. I think i'm going to be house over halls, think it's easier, and cheaper maybe? does anyone know where is good to live? i don't know the area that well, so if people want to put up some suggestions...that would be great.
Haven't even thought about text books...do we need to buy those now? i was thinking that there would be a reading list maybe? I confirmed Swansea as soon as i got the offer, so i'm def going in September, really excited

Same here I'm going to wait until they send us the info next week and then arrange an open day visit.
As far as textbook and prelim reading goes, my BSc was in Anatomy and I basically spent three years dissecting cadavers so I'm not buying any anatomy texts. But I'm planning on re-capping some biochem nearer the time but that's only because I can't wait to start learning!!. I'm sure they'll let us know about recommended text books when term starts.
I'm thinking of commuting from cardiff due to some family comittments, not sure how that'll work out but I know people have successfully done this, so fingers crossed a 50 min drive won't be too bad each day.
I was wondering has anyone here got an offer who was at the interview on 29th jan?
look forward to meeting you all in the flesh sooon.

Hey guys
Well done for getting a place.
I am one of the current second years and after reading your posts thought I might be able to give you a little bit of info that could be of use.
Firstly you will get told of a general medicine book which Swansea recommends that you read prior to coming but I would strongly urge you to do NOTHING. The next four years of your life is going to consist of reading, revising and exams so chill out, enjoy your summer and just excited as being a Swansea Medic is brilliant.
The Medical School and Medsoc will organise a 'meet and greet' for sometime before the summer and our year used this as a chance to get to know a few people and work out some living arrangements. A couple of people in my year did begin by living in Halls but they didnt last long. Houses seem to work much better as I get the impression there is no separate accommodation for mature students. All of my current year will be moving on to Cardiff in September (as we are the last cohort to join Cardiff medics) which means there will be quite a lot of good quality housing becoming avaliable. There are a number of landlords in Swansea that try to only rent to medics and they tend to be the landlords with nicer houses. Also, there are a couple of people in the year (myself included) who own their own house in Swansea and would like to leave it in the hands of some nice medics. Students tend to live in Brynmill and Uplands areas which are between 10-20mins walk from uni.
Anyhow I hope this has helped you a little. Any questions just ask!!
I will be back here plugging my lovely lovely house a little bit more soon.
Congrats again

Houses are the way forward in my opinion and there's lots around Swansea, with two big residential areas nearby. Within reason a lot of Swansea is within reach. E.G. I know some that live down in Mumbles (very pretty area) which is about 2+ miles away.

I'll definately be looking for a house, as much as I enjoyed halls first time round I think its probably not a sensible idea to be doing all that again! I think the best idea is to just wait until a day in summer is organised for everyone to meet up - we've all got to decide who else to live with too remember, and not everyone who's on the course will be on this website!
Also, just to advertise to anyone who didn't see it on the other thread, a facebook group has been made for those of us that got offered a place: Swansea Med School 2010Starting Swansea Grad Medicine in 2010, can't wait!!!

Just confirmed swansea offer on ucas, look forward to seeing you all at the open day. Am hoping that it's not too far off as i'm going to be out of uk july-august and need to sort out accommodation sooner rather than later.
Sarah-Cordelia, do you have contact details for any of the landlords who like to deal with medics? + would it be possible for you to PM me with details about the house that you mentioned you'd consider letting to 2010 medics?Last edited by music-->medicine; 23-03-2010 at 05:25 AM.
