    Why is it called MBBS

    Just a curious question

why is the degree you get called MBBS (bachelor medicine/bachelor surgery), when in fact you do little or no surgery practice during your UNI course unless you specialise in surgery after FY2.
What part of the course makes you a bachelor of surgery?

Hmmm, that's a darned good question!

I don't have an answer for you as I never thought of it despite the fact that I will be receiving the MBBS degree very soon (assuming I pass finals lol).

I suppose I could ask why we don't receive Bachelor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology or Bachelor of Paediatrics degrees.

That would be nice, something fancy like a MBBSBOGBP.

In Ireland you can get a BAO (bachelor of obstetrics) as well at the MBChB

As for why it's MBBS - it's just tradition - about 150 years ago the GMC said that doctors had to have both, and so institutions awarded both together. The GMC then changed their mind and so allowed institutions like Soton just award a MB.

    Same odds though. Just history.

I think the biggest argument for them all moving to the same award is international recognition, like the us MD or whatever...

Soz about digging up an ancient thread.

Just wondering why Soton decided against awarding Bachelor of Surgery to med graduates?

Doesnt it hinder them in any way when applying for jobs?

Well considering that all medical degrees have to pass the same levels of accreditation, etc.. then.. no?
