    SGUL GEP 2013 entry

Is it too early to start talking about 2013 yet?

I'm excited by SGUL, it's the only choice I've made my mind up about so far.

What sort of experience and background do people have? I've got a 2.1 in Pharmacology from Liverpool. I've been volunteering in a hospice for the past few months, and I've got some more lined up starting next month at the royal london. I've also hopefully got three weeks of shadowing with some doctors at bupa in July.

What are people's previous experiences with applying? This year I got rejected flatly by southampton, newcastle and barts, and rejected after interview by warwick. I put it down to inadeqaute experience, mediocre UKCAT and naivety (why would anyone apply to southampton? ).

I'm feeling better about this year though. I'm sitting on a sexy GAMSAT score from 2011, although I didn't actually apply to any GAMSAT schools (don't ask).

    Bring it on!

    Hello

Im applying to SGUL and Nottingham for 2013 entry and this is my first time applying. I've got a 2.2 in Psychology from Leeds and an MSc Memory and its Disorders also from Leeds. I've been volunteering in my local psychiatric hospital for the past 18 months. I'm currently revising hard for the GAMSAT which I am dreading!

As you've said Bring it on!

I'm also looking into SGUL for 2013 entry as well as a few others that will take other graduate qualifications other than a 1st or 2:1. Unfortunately just over 20 years ago I got a 3rd...it's quite annoying that it doesn't seem to matter that I went onto get an MSc in Biomedical Sciences with Hematology Specialization and then just under 10 years ago was awarded my PhD from the Queen's University of Belfast in Cancer Cell Biology. I was originally from the States so came back here to work about 10 years ago, I'm now a Naval Officer and Scientist in the US Navy. I'm a research scientist in Combat and Trauma Medicine and have had the great fortune of doing some amazing research and learning some even more amazing skills over the years. I'm hoping all my clinical research and work with all types of doctors as well as the volunteering I do will gain me an interview. Being limited by the PhD as the entry qualification there is only a handful of places I can apply. But I am excited to try! Busy studying for my UKCAT!

Hi Navy Doc - just to say don't worry too much, I know they love the armed service / navy / military stuff. Friend of a friend just got into all his choices pretty much based on that fact!!

Never to early to talk about 2013 entry

Choices and stats are in my sig though I will def. be retaking the UKCAT and maybe the GAMSAT.

    *Waves pre-med flag
    1. SGUL : Jan 7th interview - BOUNCE BOUNCE BOUNCE
    2. Swansea : Rejected w/o interview (booooooooooo)
    3. Nottingham : Just filled out the questionnaire AND I'M EXCITED
    4. Let's forget this one ever happened.

GAMSAT: 65 (when rounded!), or 67 if you do it my favourite way

What gets you the interview is the GAMSAT and passing the other qualification criteria - ie having a high enough degree.
What gets you a place is what you personally deliver in the interview.

I know a few ex forces on the course. For example an ex-army officer, who served as a MedEvac pilot, and an enlisted RAF medical tech (who got me rather drunk last night after our exams ended...) There is no favoritism for the ex forces, but perhaps thier training helps them shine in the interview.
From what I have read of you, you definitly have the background to perform well, but its going to be how you bring those experiences out in the interview. (Assuming GAMSAT goes well - Do internnationals need GAMSAT?)

Good luck on your application. I hope we can help.
    SGUL GEP (T - Year) - That's a 2nd of 4 years, but 3rd of 5...

Thanks. I have loads more experience than I wrote about. I don't expect it easy because I have armed forces experience but rather I hope since I have well documented skills and training those will
shine through. I'm most curious what do the uni's consider a good candidate apart from good entry exam result and academic quals? Is there work experience or training that has the ability to set you apart from someone else?

Each uni has their own image, however most of the criteria are pretty similar.

Have a look what the GMC says : clinical junior.com - Key Attributes of a Doctor and His/Her Duties GMC
    SGUL GEP (T - Year) - That's a 2nd of 4 years, but 3rd of 5...

I'm applying to SGUL for 2013 entry - its my first attempt at a GEP app and I'm a law grad from London so getting into SGUL would make life so much easier financially. I'm currently working full-time in healthcare (dementia care home) which I'm really enjoying and have volunteered with AgeUK for a few months. I also have lots of non-medical voluntary work experience such as teaching schoolchildren about the british legal system and helping primary school students improving their reading. I'm hoping to get a week or two in a GP/hospital before the UCAS deadline - it's just tricky trying to book time off work!
