Studying Modules Abroad
Hi all,
Just wondering if anyone had any information/advice regarding studying some modules abroad during the Graduate Medicine course?
I would be interested to hear from those who have studied abroad... in particular; does it interfere with normal studies at SGUL, is it expensive, do a lot of students choose to do this, which countries are available, is it worthwhile or does it hinder normal studies too much???
If anyone has any advice/info, I would really appreciate it!!!
Thanks,
x

You will need to double check exactly how much of this applies to the new MBBS4 course at SGUL (I'm 2nd yr GEP so on old syllabus/course format) but during our 3rd year there is the opportunity for a 3 month exchange (Jan-Mar) to Australia for either your GCA or paediatric/obstetric placement. Accommodation is free, although you will need to continue paying your rent in London for that time as the Australian student whose room you are staying in over there will be staying in yours over here! You also need to pay for your flights etc which won't be cheap in January...
Also, during your final year we have a 10week elective period and many students opt to do this abroad, although obviously that isn't compulsory. Electives can be quite pricey depending on where you go, what you do and whether or not you go through an elective organisation or arrange it yourself (see other threads on this forum about electives).
My yeargroup had the option of doing our SSM in 2nd year (a data collection analaysis or audit project) abroad and SGUL will support you in that where possible but we are discouraged unless super keen as there is inevitably alot of red tape involved in undertaking research in another country. Someone who has done it abroad may disagree with me and be able to give you more info, but it seemed like the message was "you can... but it will be very hasslesome and so perhaps consider other options". This SSM is also unfunded by the uni so you would have to meet any costs yourself or through sponsorship from somewhere.
Hope that helps... as I said, not sure how much of those points carry to the new course structure. Hopefully one of the current 1st years will be able to shed more light on this!!Last edited by Lizziwizzy; 28-04-2009 at 05:59 PM.

SGUL Questions
Hi Lizzywizzy, vmash here, saw you went through the GEP, wondering if you can answer a few questions for me as i'm in my final year of chemical and pharmaceuttical science degree in Dublin.
What are the chances of getting into SGUl?
Also would it be better to go through ALevels and how would that work out as i have an Irish Leaving Certificate (Not sure if equivalent to the GSCE or higher).
I will be grateful if you can shed some light on these (have more questions but this will do for now
thanks

I'm a first year GEP and we have finally been given bits of info about our year 2 SSC. It seems they are discouraging us from going abroad - also we're not being told until May which "block" we'll be put in, and one of the SSC blocks starts 1st Sept, which doesn't give much time to organise a research project let alone one abroad!
Most of the GEPs seem keen on organising their own but apparently there is also some sort of list with projects (I imagine this is aimed more at the MBBS5 students...)
As far as later years on the new syllabus it's pretty much as the above post, I haven't heard anything to the contrary.
