Worried re depression..

Hey all,

I got my pack through today from sgul for A100, with the confirmation letter and the health check forms. However, im really worried as on the health check forms it asks if you have ever sufferd from depression and have had to take time off work. Earlier this year I lost someone close and went to the doctors for depression, although i was never prescribed any medications/ antidepressants, nor did i have any form of councelling etc. However at this time i took 4 weeks of work sick for this. It was only for this months spell and its the only time it has happened ( ie i am fine now).
However, im really worried this will affect my application, and that I might be seen as unfit to practice? I know i have to pu it down cos it says on the form you cannot conceal anything else your app may be terminated.
I was just wondering if anybody could explain whether this may prove a problem for me.

Thanks

I don't think this would prove a problem. Its more likely its so ur provided with the support u need, iif u ever need it. Since this is about depression, which could affect any one of us in particularly difficult course such as medicine, i don't think u have anything to worry about. Glad to hear ur fine now xx

wont be a problem, macca. depression isnt a big fing wif med skools as far as i ave eard (speaking to admissions crew about it). i would azard a guess in fact, that plenty of medics get depression which is undiagnosed, and plenty of applicants too. i reckon its even part of the process that meks them apply for medicine sometimes.

So alls good. unless you let it depress you hehe (just kiddin, macca, just kidding).

Four weeks off is nothing. I've had two years off in the past for depression, and I've been reassured by current med students that it shouldn't be a problem, as long as you're well at the time you apply.

Polycystic ovaries? If I had a moustache I'd get the immac out before I got depressed... though I'm sure they have deeper things to be depressed about. Maybe it's something about George's?!

lool georgies being a med skool, you get what you want if you want med skool, Vickster, i reckon.
its peoples perception that they arent getting what the wanted (ie they wanted to end up at a university seen as posh or special to get peer points back at skool or with their family) which is the problem usually.

that ma only reason for not liking georgies? you'd ave to mix wif a bunch of cretins on the five year course (they're not all cretins, far from it of course, and there are cretins everywhere, i would 'asten to add....... but there are a lot of those type of cretins there whom you wouldnt let treat your nana).
oh and the funding issue there (skool nearly went under a few years ago) and shite accomodation are minor gripes.

I was joking... I hear depression is very common amongst med students and doctors everywhere. An interesting question would be- is it the stress of the job, or are people who are prone to depression anyway often attracted to a career in medicine?

Discuss...

Have you seen that ad that comes up with this thread saying 'cure your depression in 3 minutes'?! What a load of bollocks...

aye, it usually teks ten at least for me ehhe.

i know (lool abuv) you were jestin , sorri i wuz just explaining the basis of me genuine dislike for georgies. i dont irrationally dislike the place, dont want to come across as that.

i reckon peeple dont realise what the job entails. they fink its gonna be the answer to the gap in their life when they aint special at skool.
its not, its just another job, only if you dont like the medicine and were just applying for the brownie points, its a lot lot worse.

if you dont enjoy the job, medicine doesnt mek you special, it meks you realise you wasted your life...only it does it gradually.
