Yesterday's Open Day for GEP at SGUL

Hi,

How did people find the Open Day yesterday at SGUL?

I thought it was very informative and made me realise at the forefront of my mind how much time and dedication this course will need, it's not going to be an easy ride by any stretch of the imagination. That was driven in when David Oliveira spoke.

The tour was really nice and I got a good vibe from the place.
If you stuck around for the film at the end it was quite amusing although it would have been nice to see more recent successful applicants.

swlondon.

Sorry! It's coming up to exams and we have essays as well. Two spare hours to wander round with you all would have been a blessing...

Yes, it does need time and dedication but still plenty of time for other stuff in your life. It's still easier than working for a living

echo that Medicmark... try approaching written finals when you don't have two spare hours a week! Saying that, I remember last summer term being a bit of a b****r with those essays to do.

glad to hear it was a good day though - Prof Oliveira is a total star and probably one of the smartest people on the planet...

Alright welly, haha, nice to meet you as well. What a coincidence!
Good luck with the course, you and your mate looked well happy to be on it. I'm not surprised. Well done.

Yeah it was very good to see the university, meet some faculty members and students too. Seems like the course is well on its way, it was obviously established on sound principles and people say that the difference b/w art and science grads is indistinguishable after the first year! PBL seems very effective.

I rather suspect (and I say this as someone who quite likes pbl as a learning method) that putting 70 uber-competitive and very intelligent people in a university with a half-decent library is very successful... Whatever way you teach them, they'll do rather well, mainly by sheer force of will and a lot of late nights

That's not to say pbl isn't a good way of teaching, just that I don't think its necessarily the reason for the success of the course for arts and science grads alike.

glad you enjoyed the open day!

Have to agree with Libs - It's more the FOFO than the PBL that makes the difference...

PBL is based on constructivism, and is aimed at inculcating certain behaviours. It is useful for some but not all. To find out whether it is a good model of human learning and whether it works or not, you will have to dig through a large volume of woolly material, and possibly suffer exposure to post modernism in the process.

auden makes a good point.
