"F*** off and find out" - an affectionate alternative name for PBL based courses (mentioned sometime by SGUL lecturers IIRC)...

So do you think pbl was so widely adopted simply because it is cheaper than spoon feeding you everything with lectures or genuinely because people find it more fun/enjoyable/ a better learning experience?

nah, pbl is more expensive than lecture based courses (think about the facilitator to class size ratio and you'll see why, caused lots of resentment when it was introduced at georges because GEP funding per head is so much higher than 5 year).

It was adopted because, as a 'self directed' process, educational theory says it should be better adapted to adult learning styles than lecture based courses are. I could go on, but I won't because people will start yawning....

I stick to the view that, whether you cater to people's 'learning styles' or not, clever people will do well with what they are given

I was at the open day yesterday, and I have to say it was VERY useful!
I have seen a PBL demo before at PMS but it was good to see another perspective - and yes, as a mature I think it will suit me well.
I wonder how many who attended will actually end up applying? There were quite a few of us there...

My problem is that they were very adamant that you must have been awarded any higher degrees before the 1st Sept of the year the course starts, not only submitted - the OU doesn't actually award until the December, even if you finish before the Sept - urgh... and I was about to start my MSc in Aug!

If I were you I'd check that, since when I went to the Open Day (although this was in September) they only required that everything be submitted before you start. I think in most cases if you have a Masters dissertation you won't submit it until the end of the Summer and won't actually graduate until December at the earliest anyway (I don't know if all universities do 2 graduations a year or just the ones I know about).
