Question Entry requirements for Undergraduate Course 2009

I sent an email asking about the flowchart, and whether obtaining an interview is a guarantee if you meet the specific prerequisites.

However, this was my reply:

"For 2009 entry, we require AAA at A-level with a grade B at AS-level at first attempt. We do not accept re-sits. Please note that if you intend to apply for 2009 entry, you must sit UKCAT in Summer 2008. For further details, please refer to www.ukcat.ac.uk "

And a whole lot of other details...

The lady at the Royal Society of Medicine Conference was right:

"GRADE BOUNDARIES ARE GOING UP FOR 2009 ENTRY IN MOST INSTITUTIONS!"

Therefore does that mean that the flowchart is now defunct and out of date?

^Are you kidding me! To be honest I'm not that surprised but it doesn't really affect me anyway. I managed to get all A's in my A levels but I've never taken that for granted. It's definitely a sign of the times, A LOT of people get the high grades and the med schools are having to try a lot harder to distinguish between applicants. I don't think the flowchart will apply next year, but they can decide against using it this year if they want. The prospectus and their Internet site etc are only correct at the time of print, I know at BSMS they changed their grade boundaries from ABB to AAB in the MIDDLE of the admissions season (for 2005 entry I think). Unless there's a sudden rapid decline of people applying for medicine (which is very unlikely), it's only going to get harder. Just out of interest, what else did this lady at the Royal Society of Medicine say?

There were a bunch of people from all different institutions there; ranging from Oxford to Barts and London.

This particular lady was from Barts and she was one of the admissions people. She basically said that grade boundaries will be going up for entry 2009 and that people need to try to aim much higher because it's getting INCREASINGLY competitive.

But the irony of all this was that they said that the likelihood of getting a place in med school was getting better (1 in 2), instead of the previous (1 in 10 - 60,000 applicants for 6,000 places) in all honesty I don't know whether to believe this new theory. lol

In general, they said the most obvious things of work experience, extra-curricular activities etc. and aptitude tests - BMAT & UKCAT.

They also gave us the REALITY of the course which was that it's full of EXAMS!!!! Then F1 & F2!!!!

But the funny thing was that initially, they asked how many people sitting in the conference wanted to do medicine for definite and it was about 50% of the audience. Then at the end; following all of the information, 100% of the audience wanted to do med for sure, so nobody was put off.

That was it really.

Do you know which other Medical Schools are likely to raise their entry requirements?

If it is on their webby it's because it is still relevant to 2008 entry, they will probs update it over the summer. If its in their 2009 prospectus then it is wrong, I guess they need to sort themselves out! If you are looking at an 08 prospectus try and get hold of an 09 one, it will be more relevant. =]

I know that Barts and The London have raised theirs too to AAA and now instead of a minimum of 6 Bs at GCSE required, it's now 6 A/Bs (not much of a difference but is somewhat significant).

I'm not too sure about any others though.
