    Research Opportunities for GEP?

I think students on the 5 year course can intercalate to do a BSc in any subject of their choice but was wondering if GEP students would be able to do the same... I'm a philsophy/sociology undergrad at the moment and want to do some more work on some ethical issues in medicine but am not sure if it's possible. Does anyone know? How in-depth are the SSMs?

Thank you if you can help me

One of our year has been the first (I think) to intercalate a BSc into the GEP course between years 2&3 - he's doing anatomy but could have done anything normally open to the 5 year programme. You could also probably intercalate a taught masters for a year if you already had a first degree in something relevant.

It is possible to do research in your SSM2 in year 2 - but it has to fit some fairly tightly defined criteria for the project (and some tight timings) which means many people do audit rather than original research to make sure they pass. The year 1 SSM is a prescribed topic and you can't do research. You could also do a research based elective in your final year if you wanted (10 week elective period) although your short year 3 elective specifically has to be clinically-based.

Basically there are opportunities, both to intercalate and to squeeze in some research around the course, but you will have to go after them!
