Want to come to St Georges

Hello everyone

Yeah so I would love to come to St Georges, as I have done research on universities and St Georges appeals to me most. So basically im writing this thread to ask everyone on this forum how they got into St Georges? I know you got the grades but many people are saying thats not enough. So I know I must write an appealing PS and do amazing in my interview. Im trying to do work experience at hospitals and GPs, volunteering to help to the aged and the Duke of Ediburgh Award. If I successfully do these things with my grades (hopefully) will it secure my place at St Georges??? Thanks.

You will get an interview if you fulfill the academic requirements that they have set. To do well in the interview is a different matter. Basically you need to show you have an interest, you have the drive and you know what's involved in a career in medicine, and be able to show this!

First you need to realize that at the interview you're competing with about 16 people for an offer (statistics I heard from an exec at St.George's) so you need to prepare a lot for the interview. Knowledge is power, research as much about the Uni as you can and think about what you will say. Practice your interview skills etc. Know your personal statement by heart. Be confident and don't forget to smile

Getting into medicine is tough but if you're passionate about it and you work hard you'll do it! Good luck!

These statistics about competing with 16 people for an offer do not sound right I'm afraid. If this was the case, St George's would be the most competitive medschool in the country.

If we take into account that universities usually give out more offers than they have places (usually they give about twice as many offers as there are places) then that would mean they would give out roughly 6000 interviews based on the statistics that you were given. I worked this out by multiplying this year's intake of 191 students and multiplying it by 2. This gives 382, and this figure is multiplied by 16. This equals 6112. I don't even think 6112 people apply to St George's, let alone get interviewed by them.

Actually now that you said that I have no idea were the execs. got that info from because you're right:P Though the point I was making is that the interview is more competitive at St.George's and you need to be prepared. This is because everyone who meets the academic requirement gets an interview. There is bound to be a lot of interviews for only a few places on the MBBS5. In 2008 170 students (as it says in the 2008 prospectus) will be admitted. I was also told (feel free to question this) that St.George's doesn't do twice the amount of offers as there are places but much less.

So, if say 700 are interviewed and only, say, 250 get an offer you are still competing with 450 students. So, then every 3rd (rounding it up from 2.8) person would get an offer:P.

Ps. DO STILL PREPARE FOR THE FRIGGIN' INTERVIEW, if you don't want to get caught with your pants down:P (that's the saying, right?)

Ok thanks for the advice, I understand the importance of the interview.

If you are a St Georges Medic can you just tell me the subjects you did for your A Levels? Thanks

oh come on.
the interview isnt competitive. i've been there and its a cinch, and i've eard sum ofthe answers that successful candidates gave to land a place. all you need do is to turn up and show an interest in sgul to get in. Although i ave a sneaky suspicion they may well try to test non traditional applicants more than the regulat intake - they often get a rite drilling by comparison.

On the 'ole though, the reason so some dont get the offer is they let on that they dont want to come there during interview.
