Intercalated degrees @ SGUL
Hi all,
What's the deal with intercalated degrees at Georges? Do you have to achieve a certain minimum level in your exams before they'll allow you to take one?
Also, I think I heard somewhere that you can intercalate at any University of London uni. Is this right or am I talking rubbish?
Lastly, what intercalated degrees is Georges offering at the moment? I've tried to find out but info is a little scant..
Thanks :-)I left my heart in Papworth General..

The status of iBSc entry is set to change soon but the current year who is applying to do one works like this. A set number of places is allocated for 2nd, 3rd and 4th year students. Of all the people who apply, the top x number of applicants, corresponding to number of allocated places, will be given offers. Therefore ranking is based upon academic results. The better you score in exams then the more likely you are to be given the module of your choice or be able to intercalate. Having said that, some modules do have other preferences e.g. Anatomy tutors look more keenly only applicants who have chosen more anatomy modules than one who hasn't. Bear in mind, however, than not all students choose to apply for an iBSc and some are not allowed to (e.g. those with a degree)
Students who wish to apply for an external intercalated degree can freely apply to as many as they wish. For practical reasons, nobody applies to every university in the country. Popular choices are UCL, King's, Imperial. Other university may offer modules that is not available to SGUL students. However, one needs to bare in mind the competition of entry. there will be competition against: (1) other students who are applying externally (2) students of the university itself (3) students from another university applying for the same one as you. If you the lucky winning of a place you will need to be given permission to intercalate externally by SGUL's committee before you can accept the offer. Alternatively, you can major your iBSc at SGUL but take selected modules from an external university. This will give you the advantage of being able to make more contacts outside.
Courses available can be classified under several big headings:
- Biochemistry (e.g. study of molecular science + lab techniques)
- Genetics (e.g. biology of cancer, inherited disease + metabolism)
- Anatomy (e.g. embryology, images of anatomy)
- Psychology (e.g. developmental behaviour)
- Medical Imaging (e.g. physical basis of imaging)
- Physiology (e.g. physiology of diabetes mellitus)
You have to choose a certain number of modules from these categories to fill a quotient. Pick 'n mixing is allowed and research projects are also available, which are worth more unit points than single modules. Frankly, I'm a little disappointed by the range and have subsequently applied externally also.
This is all I can think of at the moment. Specific questions are welcomed.
