Whats wrong with St Georges??

I have mentioned St georges to a couple of people now as one of my choices and people have been saying its not the best place to go. Can anyone enlighten me as to why St Georges has a poor reputation? These are different people from different areas of the NHS saying St Georges is not ideal.

St. Georges doesn't have a poor reputation! I have had several doctors from abroad congratulate me on my place here due to its fantastic reputation as a teaching hospital. We have a QAA of 23 out of 24 regarding teaching, and we're very successful in terms of research too. Our students are a great bunch, and several of our lecturers are world's leading experts on their subject. If said people themselves can't give you an answer, I doubt the Georges forum will because its mostly full of people who sing the school's praises...

People who criticise Georges are normally people who applied and didn't get in...

wel thats not me then. got the place, but not interested, each to their own though. needless to say, i didnt buy the t-shirt....

Yet if you're serious about medicine, then sgul is a good place to go. Seeing as thats paraphrased from a prospectus, thats a suprisingly 'onest and tru statement. i personally see it as one of the top places in the South East for medicine, abuv imperial and ucl and probably kings for starters (but hey dont listen to me). i simply wanted some other specific fings as wel as medicine, thats all.

one other fing.

ma friend went to sgul and he comes from quite a posh skool. when he went back to posh skool and let his tutor know what uni he wuz at he got slated for it 'why sgul? thats not good, why not ucl or imperial?'

i wuld gues that sum posh skoolers mite ave a certain dislike for it, judging from his experiences, lent to them by teachers trying to maintain their skool's crop of students into the ivy league unis and thus their reputation. For anyone who doesnt know....now reputation usually equates to bullshit marketing technique, so dont fall for that if you are a posh skooler, macca.

My sister did her nursing degree at Kings and said that people often speak badly of Georges as a training scholl. Also, when I went for my medical access interview and said I was interested in going there, the interviewer cringed and told me I could do better. Like I say, two completely different people with a dim view of the place - I was begining to wonder if there was something I needed to know!

oh goodness. finally one mor point must be made by li'l me.

aving spent some time at sgul (it wuz ma local teaching ospital ) i often asked wat they didnt like about the uni most and the answer that sometimes came up was location. and this was usually dictated in dulcet posh accents of the med student i wuz talking to.
As you've probably guessed, many of the applicants come from quite comfortable middle class backgrounds. Thus for them, moving to Tooting is like moving into shite. And therein lies the problem...it is only there own perception of where they are moving to that makes them feel they are spending five years in Shiteville.
For a med stoodent from Normville, moving to Tooting is a Godsend...becos lower rents and cheap shopping abound, and thats wat you need if you study in london for years on loans.

In fact, tooting is arguably the best location you can be in as a med student in london. So be careful who you listen to, cos the poshies tend to ave a subcultured view of the place.

yeah all the kings nurses i met tend to be very stick-uppy about there course being better than others. frankly though the situation is reversed ifyou talk to sguk nussing students about kings, you see.
