what is fixed term specialist training?
Hi everyone,
Can some explain me what it fixed term specialist training?
In what is it different than the specialist training and the GP training?
Why is it that the someone who achieve the fixed term specialist training can then work while people going through the specialist or GP trainings still have few more years to complete?
Thanks for your help.

That's not correct. Fixed term specialist training (FTSTA) is where you do a single year of a training course with no guarantee of a job after that year. eg, After F2 you get a FTSTA1 post in paeds (for eg), then you would have to apply for a separate FTSTA2 post - or try and get on the ladder as a ST2. You could of course leave after your FTSTA1 and become a career grade doctor, but they aren't the same thing and just because you have done a FTSTA post does not mean you are destined for a career post.
FTSTA posts are identical in content and assessment to the year of the usual speciality training program they mirror - it's just you aren't guaranteed a post when you've finished the year.
This way it is difficult to guarantee training but it isn't the same as a staff grade post - these are now termed "Career posts" and are on a separate area of the MTAS flow diagram!Nick Brazel
