Calling all BM5 2010 applicants!
Hey, I'm currently on a gap year and am applying to Southampton for 2010.
I didn't notice a thread where current applicants for this year's cycle could get to know each other and maybe discuss grades, UCAS etc.
My A2 levels were AAB (Chemistry, Biology, Maths) and my GCSE grades were AAAAAAABBC (not the best
).
Got UKCAT next week!
Who else is applying this year and with what grades etc?

I'm an international student applying to the 5 yr., kind of my first choice, heard A LOT of good things a/b Soton! I got a 640 on my UKCAT, have a bachelors of science in Bio, and have worked 3 yrs. as a optometric tech and have volunteered in 4 foreign countries to do medical/missions work! I'm also applying to Warwick GEP, Keele, & UEA! Very pumped...hope to get into at least one school!
GOOD LUCK on your test...be confident and you'll do well!

Oh you've done a lot then. With your degree and experience with volunteering I think they'll be able to see you've put a lot of effort into becoming more well-rounded and ensuring that medicine is for you
You've just got to put this across in your personal statement! I was thinking of applying to UEA aswel but I'm not too sure at the minute.
I took the UKCAT last year and did alright (672.5) but hopefully I can match/top it this year- I'm hoping last year wasn't just a fluke :P

I really like the fact that they only want an E or higher in A-level chemistry for graduates!!
Does anyone what experience they really like or is it more what you've learnt from it that they like?Medicine 2010

I've applied for Southampton this year

GCSEs are 7 A*s and 3 As
AS levels are AAAAA (Maths, Chemistry, Biology, Philosophy, and General Studies)
UKCAT average is 655.
Not entirely sure what they are after in an applicant as they don't interview! But fingers crossed
.. Good luck to you all!

Hi guys,
I'm applying too, and have a relatively unique background.
My GCSEs: A*A*AAAAAABBB
My predicted grades:
A2 Bio - A
A2 Chem - A*
A2 Psych - A*
AS Physics - A (i'm taking another AS this year because i didn't last year)
UKCAT average - 692.5
Basically, I've already been to college, but I did completely different a levels and didn't do very well because I was very unhappy, not to mention unfocused. As soon as I finished college, I joined a different college to begin new a levels in science, with the ambition to study medicine and it's been like this ever since.
Really having difficulty getting across in my personal statement that I screwed up once before but it's made me a much more determined, focused person etc etc... argh! It's hard to show my passion for medicine on paper, when you can see my previous grades/completely different A levels!
I've got quite a bit of work experience that seems to come across well in my statement. I only hope Southampton understand my situation from my statement alone because obviously I don't have the chance to explain it better in an interview!
I want to go to Southampton because I've decided I don't want to leave my support base. My family has been so wonderful to me, I don't think I could do a medical degree without them (however pathetic that sounds...).
Sorry to have gone on and on guys!
Maybe we should discuss our interests/other details if we want to get to know our potential fellow students better! Though it's all about the numbers at the moment haha...

Hey, Southampton is a good choice (Y) They're not after a list of work experience placements but how you've developed from them, so reflect on your experiences on your PS if you can

Hey, wow you're a really strong candidate academic wise
The thing with Southampton is that once you meet the academic criteria it's just a "tick in the box" so applicants with higher grades have no advantage over those who just meet the criteria, however unfair that sounds lol :P

Hey, you've got solid predicted grades and UKCAT- well done! It's hard to explain circumstances like those in a PS because of the character limit etc. Don't use too much space on it as once they've established that you changed your A-levels/career path etc and now have good grades in the required subjects, they will know that you are determined to pursue medicine and a motivated candidate.
As for other details etc, I'm from Leicester and on a gap year at the minute after being rejected from med med last year
Second time lucky hopefully!
