Gap Year Now, When I Am Meant To Be Starting This October?

If I ring up the soton admission tutor, do your think he/she might let me defer to go on a gap year at this point in the admissions cycle. It's just my friend has asked me to go on one with him, going to new zealand, peru, vietnam plus more, to do some extreme stuff... skydiving and going through some jungle etc. It's so appealing to me because if I don't do it now, I'll never be able to do it because after med school it's straight into the foundation years, and they'll ask why I am going on such a medically unproductive year, while it will be an enormously productive year for my adventurous side. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Why not go and arrange some volunteering at hospitals and places while abroad? That way you can have fun and also get a "medically productive" year.

sounds like a good idea at least you will know that you will definitly be starting in 2008 as you will have no retakes or anything to do. I think its worth a try, phone up the admissions, explain your reasons and add in how it will help you , and yes why not spend a few days in a hospital or hospice, that way you will get to do all the adventorous things, but still start getting ready for the course. I think admissions are usually understanding and its definitly worth asking, its better then spending your whole life wondering! good luck!
