    foundation programme choices

Hello to everyone over in Sheffield!

I am just writing because I got allocated to the South Yorkshire Foundation School for my first foundation programme job (to become an FY1 doctor).

The areas within the foundation school include:

    Chesterfield
    Rotherham
    Bassetlaw
    Barnsley
    Sheffield City
    Doncaster

Now my question is: Where do you guys like the most out of this list and why? I have only ever visited Sheffield city centre and liked it a lot but I have not been to any of the other places so any information from the point of view of a medical student would be most interesting!

Please write back on this thread or send me a PM.

    Daniel

Sheffield is the least run-down of these areas - and has the bigger hospitals offering more specialist services (I believe the Northern General is one of the biggest hospitals in the country). I don't know Bassetlaw, but Chesterfield, Rotherham, Barnsley and Doncaster are smaller towns - but lots of friendly people, and reasonable shopping areas.

If you prefer a city, then Sheffield is your best bet, with Rotherham second (as it's so close). Barnsley and Chesterfield are slightly further away, but are nicer places than Rotherham, even if they are a little run-down compared with Sheffield. Doncaster has some nice areas, but I'm not too familiar with the town centre - I don't think it's all that great though...

Transport links between all these areas are reasonable (but no idea about Bassetlaw - I've spent most of my life in Sheffield, but although I've heard of Bassetlaw, I don't know where it is) especially between Rotherham and Sheffield.

Anything else you would like to know?

Why? Can you not progress in your career if you are at a DGH? What happens to people that work in them?
ANYTHING WRITTEN BY ME ON THIS SITE DOES NOT REPRESENT THE VIEWS OF SOUTHAMPTON UNIVERSITY!

Finally a final year medical student!
