    Time table for year one

    Hi ,
i was just wondering if anyone could tell me what a rough time table of year one for Medicine would be like....and does it vary for one person to the next...
are you split into groups....are you given a sheet which tells you what the topics that are to be studied in detail in first year are for the exam? and how do u get a hold of exam papers..i mean past exam papers..and mark schemes.....can u ask the teachers for your own personal help...

thanx once again i appreciate all your help...and if i have repeated a stickie from the past pls excuse me..

If anyone would like a copy of last year's Phase 1a timetable for the first 8 week module of the course (the Introduction to Medicine and Medical Sciences - IMMS) to get an idea of what to expect, then I can send you one by email. Just PM me your email address.

PS - there don't tend to be past papers, as many of the questions are repeated, but you will usually be given maybe one, or at least some example Qs, nearer the time of the exam.

It's not like A-levels, where you can revise by doing questions, as there aren't really enough for that, but there will be lecture outlines and problem blueprints available online to use as a revision checklist if you want to make your own.

As for asking teachers, you will have an ILA tutor who you could talk to, but it's difficult for one person in particular to help you, as they will have an area of expertise and may have forgotten a lot of what you'll be learning! It's probably better to ask students in the years above you who will know the sorts of things that you'll be asked.

But exams are a long way off yet so don't worry too much!

I've just started at Sheffield, and in a lecture we had a few days ago, it was mentioned that being resident in Sheffield during term-time is a requirement of the course. The timetable so far is mostly 9 - 5, but we have got a few sessions timetabled for the evening and I'm sure that as you advance through the course there will be a lot more early mornings and late nights, making commuting pretty much impossible - not to mention that you need to be in Sheffield to have access to all of the libraries.

People do commute from areas outside Sheffield, but they are a lot closer than Liverpool - I don't think it would be possible for you to do that and cope with the demands of the course, and have a life in general! Maybe consider moving to the city you get a place at, or applying closer to home.

PS Medicine is a full-time course, so yes it is generally Monday-Friday.
