Hi, I'm showing my face for the first time on this 'Forum' lark as I am hoping to apply for Medical School again in the near future. I am a chartered physiotherapist who graduated in June 2005, however throughout my training, particularly during my clinical placements, it became apparant that I really wanted to study medicine. At present I am working as a Research Assistant in Rehabilitation Sciences and am 18months away from completing my PhD. It is my intention that I will apply for Medicine once I have finished my research degree, however I am also about to commence my Chemistry A level via private tuition as it is a qualification I lack - so I am doing this alongside my PhD. With regard to Medical Work experience, I have had quite a bit to date: I have worked with doctors on various wards during my time as a student physio, observed GPs in a Musculoskeletal Specialist Service, observed paediatric surgery, been on the Jury for a murder trial of an accused GP, and am currently conducting research with an orthopaedic consultant. I have done voluntary work with the MS Society, am a church youth leader, have an award for my undergrad research, have grade 8 in two musical instruments and am a competitive long distance runner.
Anyway, that aside, I am quite keen to apply to Sheffield and wondered if anyone could shed some light on whether my qualifications/experiences would be suitable? What else can I do? Last year I applied for 4 GEP programmes and was rejected by all without even one interview. It is still my passion to become a doctor and I would appreciate any advice. What do Sheffield look for and what is there perception of 'non-standard' applicants (i.e. not a school leaver) like myself? Thank you!
Not to be harsh, but not too surprising you got turned down for 4 GEPs - they're even more competitive than 'vanilla' medicine, and the traditional advice on this board is to apply to 2 x GP and 2 x traditional courses.
There are plenty of non-school leaver students at Sheffield, often without the traditional bits and pieces that many on the forum consider "essential" to get in. You should be fine. Contact admissions with a brief resume asking if they would consider your application.
With your qualifications, experience and level of outside interests, you would be an attractive option for Sheffield Med School.
I guess your application may be a little while off, but it won't hurt to get your name known at this early stage. I know the sub-dean for admissions pretty well so if you want some 'tips' feel free to PM me. I can let you know who to contact and the best way to approach it
Oh, sorry to everyone on the waiting list :( That's rubbish!
Out of interest people who were rejected from Imperial, did they email to inform you or did you find out via Track?
Hi all,
I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I emailed Warwick today to say that economics was still on their list of acceptable degrees and got this back:
"Thank you for your email. Should...
GCSE/A level results have NO CORRELATION with whether youll do well in medical school :) It's to do with your motivation to be a doctor, doing well, and having good clinical skills (which they dont...

The most annoying thing is that the selection centre always used to be later in the year, so other unis had a chance to give out offers first. If they'd done that this year, some of the rest of us...
