old query - part time work!!!

    Hi,

    Threechoices face me

    1) Live mostly on the student loan and have about £400pcm to live on and not have to work. This may jeopodise my wedding plans

    or

    2) Save the student loan and work TWO eveings a week of 4.30pm to 9pm as a nurse and EVERY SINGLE saturday (except annual leave) 8-4.30ish and have about £650pcm

    or

    3) Work and spend the student loan and have over a grand a month to play with. Obviously after bills have been paid and things.

The thing is that i want to have enough time to study because i don't want to fail, i want time to be able to socialise and make friends but if i am scint all the time i am worried this will limit my social outlets. Grrrrrr! I am all confused!!!

Any advice from people out there. I have to let work know next week so they can recruit my replacement

    cheers

Why don't you join the nurse bank. That way you can pick up shifts when you need them, and not have to work if you have a big essay or something to do?

because with the state of the trust where i live (and the private hospital i work at for that matter) there is a clamp-down on nursing bank so i would never get work. it would have to be a contracted position at my hospital. see thats another thing, if i don't carry on working where i am then that would also be my nursing life over for ever and ever!

I dont think you'll have any problems working a few evenings a week and one day at the weekend. I worked a lot more than that throughout first and second year and didnt have a problem. You may even find it helps because you'll be doing a job where you can learn as you work.

If you want to chat, feel free to email me, or add me to msn.

If you have to pay rent etc then I'm not sure how far you'll get on options 1 and 2. The good thing about working a couple of evenings a week is that you save the money you would have spent that evening too (if you see what I mean): nice double dip.

Reading Sherlocks' helpful post brings up another point: looks like there is no time to PT work post-2nd year, so perhaps it's a good idea to get the money in when you have the opportunity.

Think Mel (Sherlock!) is spot on really, you're okay doing a fair bit of job stuff in pre-clinical. I'm still doing some part-time in third year, but obviously working in the week is not really practical in clinical.

I'll still be doing a fair bit of work during clinicals but nowhere near as much as in phase 1. I'll be working every saturday and maybe a few things in the evenings. I'm lucky in that I do not have to work contracted hours, the nature of my job means I can pick and choose hours to suit me.

No, don't have to drive. A lot of the work is in and around sheffield, including both football stadia. It certainly helps if you drive and have a car because then its more likely that you'll get to do emergency calls and late jobs.

The deal at thornbury sounds good, you'll definately have no problems with 2 evenings and saturdays.
