Advanced Higher Projects
Hey, can any past students of AH biology and/or chemistry please give me any advice on the investigations?
I would really appreciate it. In biology I'm investigating the effect of common drugs on human digestive enzymes, but in chemistry I have no idea. I'm so stuck. I was told perhaps not to do making aspirin cos it may cross over with what I'm doing in biology, even if I don't use the same drugs.
Any help you can give, I would be so grateful for.
Thanks all!

In Chemistry I did worked out how much paracetamol was found in different brands of paracetamol tablets. This was really interesting and worked well. I would recommend it to anyone! It is quite hard and you do have to be very clear on what you set out to do, but I guess all advanced higher projects are like that!

Thanks for the replies, I was advised that it would maybe be best not to do anything with drugs like paracetamol because I'm using drugs in biology and this may cross over and end up confusing me ... I don't really know how well this advice stands up though.
Really, I want to make things as straight forward as possible, was the iron tablet investigation straight forward?

I did determining the cholesterol content in different types of egg. (different chicken breeds, the eggs were really cool, different colours ) I presume you know about the fact you have to have multiple aims to score highly. This was really easy in the eggs because I tested white and yolk as one aim, the different eggs as the second and my third was finding a reliable method of testing the cholesterol content. The last aim is really easy as all you have to do is do the Liebermann-Burchard test and then prove that it is effective by using accepted values from a textbook or the internet of cholesterol content. I found it really easy and completed the investigation in 2 weeks and got 21/25 for it so was really pleased. Good luck with whatever you choose!

Sorry didn't answer your actual question! I wouldn't do two investigations with drugs as if you use any information in both investigations it may flag up when they run them through their plagiarism checker. I was worried in Biology last year as both me and a girl in my class were doing microbiology investigations testing the effect of cleansing agents on bacteria, very similarly! I was worried that they may say that we could have copied, better just to avoid these circumstance altogether!

Thanks for the luck Anton =]
And thanks to you all for your answers and advice.
I talked to my other chemistry teacher and he suggested analysing aspirin under different environmental conditions.
Either that, or if I have any relatives that have had their gallstones removed, and they still have them, I can analyse the the level of cholesterol in them ... but that's unlikely due to lack of relatives having gallstones removed at the moment. Damn. x]
Ah well, any other advice, keep it coming, it's much appreciated.
