Student Reps

What is the procedure for the election of Student Reps? Is there a particular system that involves voting from existing members or is it a first come first serve basis?

Election process

The process for new reps is fairly simple.

Basically I can send out a nomination form to anyone who is interested (provided that there is currently a space for a rep at your university) my email address etc is below.

All forms are then taken to the following committee meeting where the current reps and core officers will discuss and vote for new members.

We have of late had quite a few nominations from some universities where only one place is vacant and so have asked all those nominated to get involved and see if they enjoy it before we put them to a vote at the next meeting.

All reps must be current members of the RSM and once you have been voted onto committee you may stay as long as you like - until you graduate!

Hope this helps

Unfortunately we do have to limit places on Committee to 4 from each university and the GKT rep positions have been very popular this year!

The other way to get involved with the RSM is to get involved with Sections. As a student member you can join up to 4 different Sections at the RSM (there are 55 to choose from) these range from Anaesthesia and A&E to Urology and Venous, with History of Medicine and Quality in Healthcare and other not speciality subjects as well.

If you have a particular interest in one of the areas you can put yourself forward to the Section Council to become a student representative for that Section. Obviously some of the Sections already have the position filled - but if you contact me I can let you know if the area(s) you are interested in have positions available?

I hope this is of some use.

For anyone else interested in finding out if their university has positions available for representatives you can find out on line at www.rsm.ac.uk/students

Thank you for your reply.
I would be very grateful if you could give me some more information on the RSM section vacancies. I am particularly interested in paediatrics, child health and neonatology (including all sub-specialities), obstetrics and gynae, A&E and trauma. I would be very appreciative if you could let me know about the above.
Thanks kindly
Cheryl

We currently have student representatives on the Maternity and Newborn, O&G, A&E, Catastrophes and Conflicts and the Paediatrics Section Councils I’m afraid!

We are in the process of setting up a Critical Care Section however, if that might fit in with the Trauma side?

Sorry not to have better news!
