USA residency straight from UK Medical school
Hi there,
I am really really confused and I am hoping someone can shed some light on things for me!
Basically, my husband works in the USA, and it looks like his career will stay here. (I am here for a year with him - thanks to a sabbatical from my Med School). I am going to do all the USMLE exams etc etc, but to apply for a residency, one needs a EMFMG certificate. When I look into this certification, to be fully certified (and able to apply to a residency) you need your final medical school transcripts. So does that mean it is impossible to apply directly from my final year in my UK degree to a residency in the USA, as I would not have graduated, even if I have completed all the exams?
So am I stuck definitely doing an F1 position in the UK just to wait for my medical school transcripts?
Thanks!
Cat

from one alabama residency program: "An ECFMG certificate is not required at the time of application, but in order for IMG’s to be considered for an interview, they must have completed USMLE Steps I and II and the CSA exam when submitting their applications (or the scores must be available prior to a scheduled interview). IMG’s who are interviewed for this program MUST provide documentation (an ECFMG letter of certification or an ECFMG certificate) to our office PRIOR TO February 15."
other programs say that an ECFMG is required before applying to residency.
regardless of what you do, you won't have the certificate early enough to start a US residency that year. if you don't graduate until sometime around june you're not going to have your ECMFG for a while after that.
however, i'm not sure you need to (or should unless you want to) do F1 since the US doesn't count any years of residency abroad. you could go to the US and live with your husband (depending on his visa/if he's a citizen..not really sure how this would work) or work in the UK while you apply for US residencies.
