secondly, what happens to you when you 've finished your specialization? do they kick you out?
    with thanks.
It's definitely more difficult for any applicant who did not attend medical school in North America. However, the good news is that those two specialties are not that competitive and so unless you have your heart set on a huge institution like Harvard, Stanford, Hopkins, Columbia etc. you should be fine.

The U.S. undergraduate degree neither helps nor hinders when you are applying for a U.S. residency position. If you do not have citizenship or permanent residency in the U.S., most medical residency programs sponsor the J-1 work visa which has a 'home requirement' when the visa expires. This is an added headache, and it becomes time-consuming and expensive to get out of that when you are done. Bottom line: there is a lot of red tape but, if you are motivated, you'll make it work. If you have a green card, the J-1 issue is not a concern.

Out of interest, can foreign applicants get into specialities like ENT, ortho or plastics, if they are prepared to go outside the main teaching hopsitals? Also whats the difference between plastic surgery and general-plastic surgery?

This system sounds very MTAS like, does it work well?

    Thanks.

They can match, would rec having some published papers, research and a gunho work ethic!

If u do plastics match through frieda u have an assured spot.. otherwise, u can do general for a few years and then apply for fellowship..
    Cheers, all the best..

Yes, tough.. but there's a chance.. again it depends on lots of factors (from personality to educational goals)..

unfortunately, FMG's always need to go the extra mile to prove their worth. Then the PD will usually give them a chance!

It depends on how you define "main teaching hospitals" and it depends on how competitive the specialty is. There are plenty of state medical centers that are teaching hospitals and foreign med grads are often found there. For prestigious teaching hospitals (Harvard affiliates, Stanford, Wash U, Hopkins, Columbia, Cornell, Yale etc.) there is pretty much no chance of a foreign med grad with VERY mediocre USMLEs (even with publications) matching there.....unless they have a significant inside connection.

I agree in part w/ the above, but if you have superb knowledge in a specific field; say rad physics or nanotech that's up and coming, you have a chance... These places need the brain power..
