Hello - thinking seriously about Queens for 2010 - Do you know if there is a minimum amount of points (based on the Queens admission criteria of points for GCSEs and UKCAT) above which they will give automatic conditional offers. I read somewhere that it was 32 - just wondered had that changed or if you know of any other criteria whereby automatic offers are given. Thanks

yeah its basically they have a point cutoff and evry1 who gets above it gets an automatic offer (provided they do the rite subjects and get the grades etc).

Last year i think the cutoff was 34.People still got in with below 34 points but any1 who got above 34 last year got an offer.i think its unlikely that it will go up this year because i 34 was obscenely high last year (dont think any1 in my school got offers!) I would say the very maximum would be 35 but again i doubt that will happen. If anything it may go down. But i would say if you have 32 points you're in with a good shot of an offer and if you have 34/35 you should get an offer.

Do you mind me asking how many points you're on?

Yeah, I am applying to Belfast for 2010 as well. Is it definite that they give automatic offers to anyone above their cut off? I will have 37/40

hmmm...tips.have no idea!really dont know how i managed 2 get through the UKCAT.well for the DA i found that writing down the code translations on the whiteboard very helpful.it means you can sit back and just look at all he words without having to memorise them and try to put them in a sentence in your head at the same time. I seemed to be ok with timing on DA so i had time to do it.

The other sections i literally just guessed. I was rubbish at shapes and literally could only notice 2 similarities in all the shape sets i was given.so i guessed the rest and hoped for the best and managed 2 scrape 600. The maths ones are a lot easier in the real thing than all the practise books. But again my timing was awful-had 5mins left and i realised i only did the 1st 2 scenarios (i.e. 8 questions). And then i managed 2 get through a lot of the VR ok and i would sort of naturally be good at that sorta thing so i did ok in it. Again time issues meant i had to guess a lot.

Think the trick is jus staying calm in it and watch your timing...and dont be afraid to just guess quickly and move on. (also in the VR i found that quite often it is worthwhile to just guess the common sense answer if you dont have time to actually check the passage).

Hope this vague post was of some help!:L

well you can never say for definite.Usually they do but I'm just not getting complacent about it. In my view no-one is guaranteed an offer. But with a score of 37 you're in with a very good shot.

However, my careers teacher apparantly came into some "secret information" that they will be re-scoring everyone who gets above their cutoff. Like everyone above the cutoff apparantly will go through to a different stage where they will score your personal statement and other things. I wasnt in the day she told the rest of the medicine applicants so I dont really know what it was all about. But by he sound of the rest of the students it was sort of bullsh*t. And at the Queens open day the medicine admissions made no reference to scoring personal statements or anything-they just said they "read them".

But yeah abc10 i would say you would be in a pretty comfortable position

Just to echo this, I phoned up Queens' admissions office, and the lady there specifically said there is no scoring system used when reading through the personal statements. As long as it shows a sufficient level of commitment to medicine, you will be fine. That, of course, is a very subjective thing, which is why you would never say you're "guaranteed" an offer.

I'm also applying to Queens, good luck everyone!

Lol, unless your personal statement is AWFUL, you should be OK. They just are worried if they see absolutely no evidence of trying to find out about medicine etc, and even then, they might interview you and if they see motivation there, you'll be fine.
