It's because to be an effective psychotherapist, you need to be incredibly self-aware and prepared to deal with any issues/feelings of your own that might arise as a result of something a client/patient says- the 'counter-transference', to put it in Freudian terms. Personal therapy is a mandatory requirement of all accredited courses offering a qualification in psychotherapy. Most therapists also continue going for therapy for a 'tune-up' even when they are qualified and practising. It's a very emotionally intense job.
Note that psychotherapy is different to psychiatry. Although some psychiatrists later decide go on to train in psychotherapy, you don't have to be a doctor to go into psychotherapy.Now holding out for 2010 entry owing to financial disaster and general incompetence
