Foundation Application Programme to be scrapped (again)
So, it has been in the works for a while, but now it's official. The Medical Schools Council will officially start trialling a new Foundation Application process with a view to fully inducting it in the 2012/2013 round at the earliest. Effectively, the quartile grading system will be standardised in some way, and the reflective 'white space' answers will be scrapped. This will be replaced by a Subjective Judgement Test which will be sat nationally.
In my view, the problem with the SJT is that it makes the system TOO standardised and provides too LITTLE to differentiate between students. If we were worried that people might be getting too much outside help with the white space questions, how is this exam going to help? Anyone with half a brain will answer each scenario in the most acceptable way?
It just seems a step in the wrong direction: it says in their summary document that there should be 'evolution' not 'revolution'. Well I don't see how much more of revolution this could be!
One positive, though, is a greater weight put on academic achievement.
Here's the document for your consideration!
