Influence of med school rankings
Everyone knows that a med degree is a med degree no matter where you go.
But when med schools have finished and your applying for jobs will the med school you went to play a greater role in wheather you get the job over other applicants. For say if someone went to Oxford medical school would they get the job over someone who went to a medical school lower down the league or a med school at the bottom of the league table. because mostly we can see that happening in other subjects and courses but is this the same for medicine.
Can someone please fill me in on the true about this thanks.Alevels AAAA( Chemistry, Biology, Business Studies, General Studies)

Nope, doesn't matter - all that counts is the points for academic ranking and the MTAS questions at FP level. After that, your clinical competence is the most important thing. Just go where you feel you will be the happiest and msot well settled to get the best grades in med school that you can.

I know lots about it, but not because people just wrote in out for me. I read around on the forum, and i read around online.
It's honestly not difficult and since this is the time of year when everyone is going through the process there's no excuse for not doing a bit of legwork to inform yourself.ANYTHING WRITTEN BY ME ON THIS SITE DOES NOT REPRESENT THE VIEWS OF SOUTHAMPTON UNIVERSITY!

Would just like to point out there are no UK rankings for medical schools. They are all the same standard, though the structure of the courses vary.
The "rankings" in the broad sheets are useless (except the Guardian one a few years back when lesicester came out top!)

That seems a bit unfair! Looks like a simple enough question to me. This is a fourm where people can ask questions if they wish-and people can answer questions, again, if they wish.
Is it not better to get a definitive answer from somebody who knows, rather than peicing together a possibly mistaken interpretation yourself. Passing on knowledge is a great thing....talk about reinventing the wheel!
Unfortunately I can't answer your question otherwise i most ceratinly would.

Possible 45 points for academic ranking in year, divided into quartiles:
1st - 45
2nd - 40
3rd - 35
4th - 30
Possible 40 marks for other section of application so mark is out of 85.
This is standardised across medical schools.Last edited by Simon; 22-03-2007 at 01:49 AM.

under the current system it doesnt matter but bearing in mind one of the things people are campaignign to be allowed to know more about is where an applicant for a foundation post went to med school, it seems likely that it will become a bit more important. i think you just need to go to the best medical school for you, if you have more than one offer.... don't worry too much about where you think other people / employers will want you to have gone. if you do well at any medical school you are likely to get a job, despite all the bad press, so dont worry too much about it.
